The fastest 68k class chip I know of in the Coldfire MCF5407 running at 220Mhz. The Coldfire chips use the same assembly instructions as the 68040 with some minor changes.

And I bet it's not compatible with the Mac's ROM and not pinout compatible with the '040... ...otherwise that'd make a sa-weet hack!

an upgrade board (replacement mobo) for the duo line might be interesting, especially if it was to run Linux without depending on the mac's ROMs. jt ™

The coldfire 68k is a risc chip with a cisc interface. The complex instructions (cisc) get broken up into simpler instructions (risc) and shoved down the pipeline for processing. If anyone knows about the Pentium and K6-2 Athlon chips it should sound familar because they are a risc chip with a cisc interface. Maybe the article is half right. Apple could be using 2Ghz coldfire chips in it's new macs.

Both the x86 and 68k instructions are cisc and the ppc intructions are risc. Of course apple would have to recompile OSX with a 68k coldfire compiler and get Motorola to get the speed up to 2Ghz or whatever the speed of the x86 chips is now.
