Seeing as people here have experience with A/UX, I'm going to ask a question. My Quadra 950 that I bought has A/UX on it, but I can't boot to it. From what I've heard, I need to have the launch application to boot to it. My question is, where can I find this application, or can someone hook me up with it?

I have A/UX running on a Q700 - and yes, there is a launcher on a small 7.1 partition by default install, which boots into A/UX. At the moment that 700 is sitting in the corner while I fix my 950 fileserver... but when it's back up I'll pop it online n post the address here :)

is it available on the link that wonk just posted?

I've stuff'd the files you should need here. When you unstuff the file, it should give you a 'bin' folder, an executable called "A/UX Startup" and a file called "launch". On the 7.1 partition here, they're the only differences from a normal 7.1 install, so it should be what you need :). Mine has an alias of A/UX Startup in the startup-items folder, so it goes straight into A/UX on booting. All 3 items sit in the root folder of the macos partition - thats where they came from on mine.

One possibility which may cause problems is if, on installing, a custom 'launch' file is created for each particular machine - hopefully thats not the case, and it'll get you up & running :)

dana

I downloaded them and it was only a few hundred K... Well, they won't unstuff now... Any ideas?

i don't do 'nix, but i'd try the process again and come back with hardware congif, os, and software specifics if unstuffing doesn't work.

Sorry, but you'll have to wait for our resident UNIX expert...

Anyway, I just wanted to comment on the number of people with 950s here: yourself, dana, Marchie, JT, and I, anyone I've missed?

The program that's actually run first is "A/UX Startup" - try running that if you can. I'm guessing it's already trying to run by how far you're getting - otherwise, I don't know exactly what would be the problem. It looks like that startup just isn't finding the a/ux partition on your machine.

dana

Is the A/UX partition supposed to be visible in 7.x? If it is, then I have a problem because it doesn't show up, but I know it's there because with the penguin app it tells me the SCSI drive partitions and it says it's there. Is there a way to make it read the partition?

Once you get to that "startup#" prompt - are you able to type say, "ls" (without the quotes) and then press enter? After that, going to the "Execute" menu and select "Boot"... I don't know if that'll help straight off, but it may give an error or two that's more helpful :)

does it just show a partition with the name "A/UX Root & User Slice" or something similar? what are all the names of the partitions you have there?. Linux also uses partitions with the A/UX type. When you said the penguin app shows the partitions and reveals a/ux there - was Penguin already on the machine when you got it? it's possible it may have a linux install there that may be useful :)

dana

Boot doesn't work and when I type ls it says

. not found

The only partition on my desktop is the 50 meg partition for the Mac OS. Peguin was on my machine when I bought it, but I accidentally deleted it. (Wasn't paying attention)

I know that there's the HFS partition and then another I remember it saying something along the lines of "Apple_UNIX"
I can't say for 100%, but that sorta stuck out in my head.

okesdokes - go to the page: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=11666

on there are a load of files related to linux/68k. The first one you'll need is near the top, one of the linux kernels. there are a few versions you could use, but the 2.2.19 is the one I've had the most luck with - so download it - it's the file named "vmlinux-2.2.19-20011022.gz"

Thats about 700kb - after it's downloaded, scroll way down the bottom of that page, and you can grab Penguin-19, one of the newest Penguin booters... it's the file "Penguin-19.sit"

Unstuff Penguin-19, and you'll have a folder with the penguin booter inside - open Penguin, and you should get a window onscreen. Go to the File menu and there should be a Settings option - select that and the options window will open with 3 tabs. Under the first tab you can select a kernel and a ram disk - you only need to select a kernel, so click tat button and navigate to the kernel you downloaded earlier. Accept that, and go to the second tab - This is where you need to find out which partition the possible-linux system is on - and tell the booter where to look for it. in linux scsi drives are labelled with the naming of "sda" for device 0, sdb for device 1, etc... so for an internal drive like the 950's which is probably scsi device 0 - we'll start there. next is the partition number. You probably have the first partition as a partition map, the next as the apple driver, the next as your HFS partition, and the fourth as the Apple UNIX ONE. Just at a guess :). That makes the unix partition likely to be "sda4"

soooo back under the 2nd tab, there is a text field (I think it's called 'command'... in there type:

root=/dev/sda4

accept those preferences... and then try the boot option in penguin! If that doesn't work, sda3, sda4, sda5 etc... or if you can see just which partition is the unix one, pop that number in.

Any more questions - ask away :D

dana

Well, we're making tons of progress! It booted, well sortof, it broung up a black screen with black text going through all configurations and what not and it gets to VFS, and says

VFS: Cannot open root device 00:de
Kernel panic: VFS: Unavle to mount root fs on 00:se

Now I have a blinking cursor and don't know what to do.

I'm not quite sure how important this all is, but here's a list from Penguin.

/dev/sda (Hard disk)
/dev/sda1 : Apple_partition_map (31 KB)
/dev/sda2 : Apple_Driver43 (27 KB)
/dev/sda3 : Apple_Driver43 (37 KB)
/dev/sda4 : Apple_ Patches (256 KB)
/dev/sda5 : Apple_HFS (48.8 MB)
/dev/sda6 : Apple_UNIX_SRV2 (191.4 MB)
/dev/sda7 : Apple_UNIX_SRV2 (982.0 MB)
/dev/sda8 : Apple_Free (34 KB)

That signature!

Since it has no separator, every time I read one of your posts you always seem to ask that question!!!

It produces an interesting effect:
"Linux installer won't work! It says Apple_UNIX_SR6 on boot. Do you like green eggs and ham?"

lol! well, I quoted you just to make the lol fit, but what I really wanted to say was.

I contacted the misterious Alien via AppleFritter. It seems quite a few people use the same names in both places, so I just went ahead and sent him a message asking him to come help if he had the time. I'm assuming that this Alien is one in the same, if not, I'll find something interesting in my AppleFritter mail box soon.

yeah, some of us are the same, but there's a different macdaddy over in unplugged. I made sure to stake out my userid on aa even though i lurk there a lot more than i post, but i took cine's advice about MAF to danamania and registered right away on aa. maybe the rest of the comrades who think they might want to hang anywhere else should nail down their handles too!

that tag line is pretty funny over here in thid thread, now that i started using a sig here, i'm forgetting to sign off on posts elsewhere and double signing here too!

mine started out a semi-cryptic tongue in cheek technosaur reference, but it seems to have been pretty well received on a non-joking level from the feedback i've gotten.

Well, I'm giving up on a NIX OS for now... I need the 2.1 gig HD for some other stuff at the moment... Now what I need to find out is how do I format the drive back to a plain old mac HFS format and have a total of 0 partitions?

Have you tried initialising it normally? If all else fails, apparently formatting it on a PC in FAT32, then formatting it on the Mac will work.

It only formats the HFS partition, it doesn't read the NIX partition... If I were to format it into FAT32, I'd need an internal SCSI card.

Yes, you would...

Have you tried a low-level format, which would (hopefully) destroy the partitions?

If I'm not mistaken, the HD SC Setup on the A/UX CD is a special version that will format and partition non-Apple drives.

If all else fails, take a large speaker magnet and wave it around the drive for a couple minutes. That'll destroy just about anything on the drive and make Drive Setup see nothing but crap, and format the whole thing.

On the other hand, it's been known to screw up the magnetic properties of the drive surface enough to make the drive totally worthless.

LMAO! I think I'll stick with Dana's link... I'll try the link and if that doesn't work, I'll find the DriveSetup from the A/UX disc and if still no luck... I'll look somewhere else, and if that fails, then I'll try your method... lol
Hopefully your method won't give a black eye or make me look like a clown

I'm not sure it'll wreck the drive physically or permanently, since companies used to sell electromagnet beds to wipe hard/floppy disks over, wiping all sensitive information.
