48MB RAM in a 520c

Haha @Snial, you’ve certainly paid attention to the details! Yes, RAM Doubler is enabled. I use this 520c chassis to test everything. The CPU currently in the machine for 48MB testing is 33MHz. I probably tested the 40MHz CPU in here a while back and moved it to a 540c chassis where it now lives. The 33 in the Control Strip *is* the CPU speed, but it only ever shows 25 or 33 and nothing else.

NICE! I guess that second RAS line was found.
Great job! I'm gonna have to add that to the list of mods I'm doing to mine! Cheers!

@robin-fo yes it’s something interesting in the iMac trayloader’s firmware. I got to it purely by accident - I was dumped into OF due to an error and this appeared when I typed Mac-Boot. It almost looks like the beginnings of the boot picker GUI, which of course wasn’t yet implemented on the very first New World Macs.

@joevt have you seen this before?

Yes, on my B&W G3 and DingusPPC (B&W G3, iMac). That image appears after a boot file has been chosen automatically. It's just showing what is booting (device path, partition number, file path, file type, icon). The icon image is in the CHRP boot script in the data fork of the "Mac OS ROM" file. Search for "multi-boot" and "multi-boot-menu" in this forum for info about the boot picker.

Interesting, I'm going to be at the Everything Electric show in Farnborough in early October, where I hope to pick up a friend's B&W G3. I'll have space, because it can go under a desk. It'll be a cross-over Mac as it can run Mac OS 8.6 through Mac OS X 10.4.
I was looking in the Read Me file for disk 1 for the Market Software Restoration CDs and it mentions the Apple Restoration CD User's Guide. Do you happen to have that in your collection too?
powerbook 💻 2400c tip of the week 🤓
during startup, just after the "welcome to mac" screen… the powerbook will attempt to initialize the pc card cage, and eject any inserted cards.
if this fails for whatever reason, the computer will instantly shut down.

if the mechanism or circuitry is iffy (in particular, the eject/sense mechanism is a bit fragile)... it can look like something more serious is wrong.

also... never insert a memory card in the upper slot and a wlan card in the lower slot... and then eject the memory card.

Classic PowerBook 2400c quirk 💻 — right after “Welcome to Macintosh” 🍏, it tries to initialize the PC Card cage. If that fails, it instantly shuts down ⚡. Try booting with empty slots, cleaning contacts ✨, or reseating/disconnecting the cage. Pure mid-’90s Apple charm 😅.

To be clear, I was doing my own hand-crafted take on AI.
I'm feeling a profound sense of unease about the world. Reading about the bile and horribleness being unloaded on anyone who isn't a) caucasian, b) male, c) straight cis d) reasonably wealthy is enough to make me want to run screaming back to bed. So I did what (I think*) I always do - I bought another computer. Then felt a bit depressed that I didn't do something worthwhile with my money.
* I might be wrong.

@Snial - UBI would be fine...as long as it is "Universal" - meaning everyone gets it.

That’s the idea, saves on all the welfare admin & can simplify tax too. Fixes the state pension crisis. Don’t know when we’ll see it though.

Also, it frees people up to get education or work on passion projects. It ameliorates the coming storm of unemployment engendered by AI. I think fears that people will just become lazy are unfounded - but even if they aren’t, why should I care?

This is one hell of a letter to put in the manual for a computer that is literally internally held together with sticky tape (you'll need to click on it to read, sorry)

hello, is the Classic II logicboard still available? I am in Austin but travel to Spring sometimes for business, so that might be an option.
