Wombat won't boot off 4GB volume

I'm playing around with my Quadra 650 with the 601 PPC card (Apple-branded). MacOS 8.0 installed just fine, but the resulting installation wouldn't boot.

My boot volume is a 4GB image on a ZuluSCSI. The machine is otherwise stock apart from the PPC card and a RAM upgrade. But all I got was a blinking question mark. I used Drive Setup off the install CD to partition the drive.

On a hunch, I repartitioned the 4GB image into two 2GB partitions. After doing that and reinstalling, it booted just fine.

This is MacOS 8.0, so it's still HFS Standard, not HFS Extended/HFS+. I do know there are some limitations on what volume sizes 68K Macs support, but I had hoped the PPC Upgrade card, which has its own ROM, wouldn't have such limitations. Alas..

It's a limitation of HFS not the PPC upgrade, with Mac OS 8.1 installed you can then go to town with a large partition.

HFS does allow me to create a 4GB partition, though. The system just won't boot from it.

I'll be trying out 8.1 later. For some reason, the 8.1 retail image off the Garden didn't work for me. I have an 8.1 CD around here somewhere, so I'll try that later on.
