If you don't want to donate, and possibly as a result see one of the few remaining sources for these vintage computing community files disappear then that's fine. Just remember that when you're looking for a utility for your compact mac and you can't find it....
In the meantime, you should probably set up some ads on the main page, so you can get funds for the server. I'm not sure why you didn't think of that before. :-/

Good idea. If you get money on a per hit basis you could rack up quite a bit of cash.

what ad companies pay publishers by impressions? I know google adsense is just by clicks...

Unfortunately I don't think any of the ad companies that do pay just by impressions will allow the ads to be displayed on a download page like that.

I don't think it's unreasonable for John to want a little bit in the way of donations to keep the resource running, especially because up to this point he's paid for everything out of his own pocket, and because everybody seems to expect it to be up and running like it was a given.

In the 1990s, people paid fairly hefty monthly sums to the operators of hotline servers for an account so they could upload and download as they wanted.

Ok, I've got the cash ready. In the next few days I gotta put the machine online on my home network and do a bunch of security updates and working on some of the code. I may also do a few additions to the archive and finish the search engine index as it is only around half complete. The last problem is booking a day off work to get it all set up at the DC.

I'll be removing the donate links on my site and putting advertisements up in certain areas. The big bandwidth killer for me was the text archive on the website but the only donations came from Hotline/KDX users. Figured I should try a different route as the donations over the past 7 years total something like $120.

How's it coming?

If you need any help setting stuff up, count me in. If the server runs Mac OS it'll be a learning experience, but I do know how to use Linux. :p

I also know HTML/CSS (although I don't like it), PHP and C, so I can help with writing stuff if that helps.

Also, I PMed you a few URLs you might want to download into the archive directly - they definitely violate a few distribution rules, but since it's a vintage archive type thing you might appreciate them. Unless you already have them. :p

Haven't had the chance to boot up the server yet. Probably this weekend I'll do the updates and then try getting to the DC next weekend.

Server runs debian linux. Been using debian for about 10 years now. The secondary web server is a Mac Mini with debian linux, but that won't be going online for a while as it isn't required for operation. The DNS/mail and third web server is on a p4 laptop with openvz virtualization but that as well isn't required right away.

Well, it looks like the preterhuman site is almost back up. The front page now tells about the server, and the link to the hotline/kdx page is there. however, when I try to connect using KDX, I get a "remote host refused connection" error.

Soon, very soon...

Haha you must have tried between the 1-2 hours after the domain was redirected and before I got KDX to actually work again.

Btw everyone, YES everything is back up. KDX is running, Hotline is running. The domain "preterhuman.net" is updated completely so use it for connecting.
