What do you do with your Color Classic

Im just curious to know what you do with your color classic, My little guy is fully operational, however I have yet to figure out what to do with it other then play a few games.

I don't use mine a lot either. I have three of them. One stock that I haven't booted in a while. One has a 575 motherboard and an Apple II card. I was playing some Apple II games on it the other day. One has a 6500 motherboard with a G3 card. I haven't used that in a bit. Everything was packed in storage for a few years. I had planned on putting a motherboard from a tray loading iMac in one so I could run OSX and had the parts put aside for it. Now I'm wondering if it's a little late in the game to do this mod. Also which machine would I do it to? I'd like to keep the stock one and the 575 one the way they are. I put a lot of effort and wore out a few brain cells doing the 6500 conversion so I'd hate to redo that one even though it's really the best choice.

I just got 7 of them, but I'm doubtful any of them work. They were left near an open window and are covered in heaps of gunk. The buggered ones will most likely become macquariums...

My Performa 250 is gathering dust in the corner.

Leaky caps, no ROM chip or RAM.

I have heard that the LC520-75 MB is a simple swap.

But one has yet to appear..

Haven't looked yet :p Been at a conference, so little time this week - hope to check out the scene this weekend!

Could the G3 itself run OSX?

B&W G3s did, and while I couldn't manage it on my old beige years ago, XPostFacto might shoehorn it in?

Would be interesting to see!

Maybe you should make the journey to Wagga...
I would if I could, but there is so little time.

(I am a father of two sons to two different mums)

Keeps me pretty busy.

Maybe in July if there is anything left.

Seriously, I took away a 10' x 6' trailer and didn't even make a dent. Trust me, it is definitely worthwhile. If it wasn't 16 hours away, I'd be doing another trip.

If you want to make the visit, PM me for the details.

Prior to the HD failure of my Mystic, it ran NetBSD and sat in my cubicle running xscreensaver. It was a nice conversation piece. I really need to make time for getting it running again.

I play the limited range of games that will run in the compact resolution (Armor Alley and Crystal Quest, mostly) and I walk it on a leash in the park to attract women.

It actually doesn't get turned on a lot, because I really don't want to replace that hard drive..

I'll start a new thread instead of hijacking this one

The CC seems like it was usefull back in the day with all the mods out there and people still want one but the uses for it have dried up with the advances in machine processing and the major switch to laptops.

I want a CC just so I can ditch my LC 550 (too big, low resolution) and put my Sonnet Presto Plus into it (to make it actually usable but still stock looking).

Don't see the point of PPC mods for it, its been all done ages ago and needs too much hacking of the case.

A stock CC is best avoided for actual use, but a CC with an LC550 logic board (fast 68030 and and hugely improved architecture) makes a really elegant little machine, though there is an art to installing a System on one. The LC550 logic board, despite what people say, is NOT identical to the Color Classic II's (more vram in the former than the latter, and a different identifier in the ROMs), though it is close enough to one to work in every way like a Color Classic II but for System installations and some Utilities. For running period software, it is a genuinely pleasant machine to use, comparable in speed to a IIci.

I use my CC"II", which is a CC with LC550 logic board, 36MB RAM, ethernet, 68882 co-processor, 1 GB HD, and running System 7.5, mostly for Hypercard, occasional writing using Nisus Writer 5/ Microsoft Word 5.1 (depending on the mood and needs of the moment), and for the odd game of Cribbage. All these are designed to work on a small screen, which is key. I also rather like certain of the old high-end Claris Applications on it: Resolve, for instance, is very powerful and is designed for use on a machine of this era.

I would never advise the 640x480 hack, by the way. Quite apart from ruining a gem of a machine, the need afterwards to view numbers or text through a magnifying glass does not make for anything that could legitimately be called an "upgrade." Bad, bad idea — says the middle aged, bi-focally challenged oldie up here in the northlands.

While I had it, I used it as a Word machine. It had After Dark installed, so I had Flying Toasters running in the background. Before I shipped it to you, I wiped the drive and installed 7.1.1. I can tell you that the performance increase was quite noticeable with a fresh OS.

You could always use the Apple IIe card, if you have one.

I use mine with an Apple IIe card. Its cute, but mine has a slight red tint on the CRT. (Just needs adjustment.)
