Just for the follow up ;
My drive was indeed dead, as I bought another one and this one works right away, and doesn't block the boot process with the iomega driver enabled.
For my "dead" one I'm gonna try to find a PC laptop zip drive and attempt a swap of the internals, it's either that or selling it for parts. We'll see.
