Virtual modem

Yea security concerns for sure. I’m sure a VPN would be more secure I didn’t have the capability to do a VPN on both sides.

If I’m not mistaken this is how GlobalTalk works?

Risk is probably low, I doubt many of the modern automated attack programs would even know what to do with a classic mac if they came across one

Now that I got that to work I decided to disconnect it and close the ports on the router. Just wanted to try it. Too insecure to leave.
I decided to use Apple Internet Router and the Wide Area Extension to tunnel AppleTalk over two subnets off from Mac OS X Server instead which is really useful.
2 subnets from Mac OS X Server via separate Ethernet ports.
Each subnet contain 68k Mac with AIR and Wide Area Extension installed tunneling AppleTalk. Each AIR Mac has string of PhoneNet compact Mac Clients. One AIR Mac has modem. Separate Mac SE calls into network and can see/connect to entire network. Brilliant!
The Mac clients with AppleShare Client 3.7.4 or higher and OpenTransport 1.2.1 or higher could always connect via IP across subnets but only to Macs with file sharing over IP ( Mac OS 9 and up), now all Macs populate in Chooser via AppleTalk where not so much before. Brilliant!
