Vintage OS application shows as text file

This issue has happened MANY times over the years. I'll get an application on my Mac SE and it is recognized as a text file. Is there any way to fix this?

We will need more information to identify what the cause is. A Binhex file is a text file, which needs to be decoded to provide the proper output. A control panel like Easy Open might misinterpret what a file is or isn't.

If you are downloading or transferring the application to / from a non-vintage MAC, it needs to be encoded before and during the move, or else it loses the resource forks, which are necessary on the Classic MAC side.

So either the text file you refer to is an encoded file that needs decoding, or you’re using a non-vintage Mac to move/store/download the original files.
