Thinking of buying a G4 15", would like opinions

After playing around with G4 ibooks and G4 12" and 15" AL Powerbooks I would say a widescreen 15" AL Powerbook would be the one to go with. The backlit keyboards (when they work), 2GB RAM, 1.67Ghz Processor and larger screen are nice to use.

I have 3 units and 2 have both slots working. if its just the solder cracking a hot air reworkstation should fix that up easy enough (and give me a reason to buy one). I have some Thinkpad T30's with the same issue of one slot going bad.

Yes, you've mentioned the hot air station thing already. So why not fix your broken one and show us all how easy it is?

Well I finally bit the proverbial bullet and nabbed a very tidy looking 15" A1106, for just shy of $70. Unless mister postman uses it for football practice, it doesn't have any dints, just a couple of minor scuffs on the underside. I took in to account a lot of what was said here, much of it was very helpeful, so thank you to everyone who shared their experience and knowledge.

Ultimately what swung the deal was price, there is a substantial gap between the G4 and intel version of the 15" PB. The best one I could find in decent cosmetic condition, was going for three times the price of the PPC version. As a fan of pre intel Apple machines, I have to confess to liking the idea of owning the last of the PPC Powerbooks :) I'm not expecting lightening speeds, nor am i expecting youtube or facebook to run that good. But perhaps not having those distractions will force me to get on doing my writing and art, instead of faffing around online lol

Hmm, were you still interested in my fixer upper?

At least you'll now have a nice, working G4, regardless. The A1106 is a nice machine, being decently fast for what it is.

Hi buddy

I saw this unit only recently on eBay, with it being local / good condition / working, I figured it would probably cost less in the long run then shipping the one you have over to me and then buying the bits to get it functioning. I was going to email you this morning :D

At least with it being PPC, all my existing software will work with it.
