The TAM Appreciation Thread

Well a USB hard drive did not work again says no driver.  Since Keyspan used apple drivers or vise versa It may be ok to extract from later 8.5 to get better extensions for usb stick and hard drive support.  At least I have shown 7.6 can use usb card with support for mice and keyboards with os 8 extensions. I hope that helps the cause.

If 8.5+ had any generic USB Mass Storage extensions, you might try copying those as well (particularly the ones from 9.1 and up).

Ya I figured just proving something USB worked off early drivers worked and was all straight apple designed drivers that the rest was easy for drag and drop that was the next step.

I just got one of these beauties (with typical eBay shipping nightmares) and was wondering what 10/100 Ethernet card worked best and was priced right? Lots of googling has pointed me at Farallon Comm II cards, but I can't seem to find any in stock or at a reasonable price.

I've always wanted one of these, and I'm so happy to finally have one. It came fully functional, running Mac OS 7.6.1. Hopefully I can get Ethernet working with it and then think about an OS 9 upgrade with some RAM to go with it!

You need the Commslot ethernet riser (and a fat back to fit it), any generic CSII ethernet card will work.  My TAM lacks the riser card (argh been looking for years for the part), so I'm using a generic 3-port USB card with an OS 8.6/9 compatible 10/100 mbps USB ethernet dongle

^You must be the same Byrd as the one on MacTalk in the TAM section. I've spend lots of time there exchanging knowledge. Nice to see you here.

Yes, the pretty much defunct Mactalk HAL2001 - what's your username on there?  Shame to see the site run to the ground by it's owners.

Hi pzy,

I'd buy a few USB 1.1 cards, most work out of the box with the stock USB drivers installed under OS 8.6 - 9; USB memory stick all the way to get stuff onto a TAM :)

USB card is a great idea. I'm hoping to get a 10/100 card for Comm Slot II to leave the PCI slot open for a USB card like that, anyone know where to source one of those? I think Farallon made the only ones. It's running 7.6.1 for now, I need to decide if I want OS 8 or OS 9! Any thoughts?

Mac OS 8.6 would probably be the fastest and most reliable of the 8.x series, should you go with that.

Beyond that, I'm really not sure.

Mac OS 8.6 has been successfully installed, along with those generic RTL drivers. Everything seems to be working great! Well except that barely any websites load in terrible old browsers ;)

Hope my RAM comes soon and I find a Comm Slot II ethernet card so I can get USB going! Too bad there's no way to get AFP shares working in 8.6.

Classilla will run on Mac OS 8.6, and will provide a much better internet experience than anything else (though still not on par with modern browsers, it's better than nothing).

There's one card, I believe it's a Sonnet Tango 1.0 or 1.1 that has FireWire 400 and USB 1.1. It's really awesome to have both. The COMM riser card for Ethernet capabilities are seriously impossible to find. Any time I find one I pick it up.

I found a TAM, in the Bay Area, on CL that was in the box, unopened, and had the original receipt it with. He was selling it for 650. I had to snatch it. It was opened, and I'm cool with that because I wanted to remove the PRAM battery.

I love the TAM's probably my second favorite Macintosh.

That's amazing. I wish I had the box! I'll be on the lookout for that Tango card, and a 10/100 Comm Slot card. Those seem particularly annoying to find too.

I have a USB card in my TAM along with the Comm slot network card.  I'll check what my USB card is tomorrow. I don't think it has Firewire but I'm pretty sure it's USB 1.1 only.

That's pretty awesome and would make anyone appreciate a TAM more when finding one like that :)

I'm not sure about OHCI support on the USB side of things with this card, but it'd be mighty handy if it was works. http://inlandproduct.com/pciusb20rj-45ethernetcard.aspx

There have been some USB/FW/LAN combo PCI cards. It might be worth digging through the G3+ forum here as I recall a discussion about controller compatibility of the combo cards somewhat recently there for use in G3 AIO and desktop cases.

Ugh, I ordered 128MB of RAM from an Amazon reseller. The listing even said "Certified for 20th Anniversary Macintosh"... and of course they don't fit. It's like the notch/pins are one off from where they should be. Annoying!
