The 19-Year GPU flashing project

The circle is finally complete on a video card flashing project I started 19 years go... :ROFLMAO:

Back in about 2006ish, I was upgrading my Digital Audio G4 to try and keep it usable as my main desktop (memory, 1.4GHz OWC G4 upgrade, SATA card etc etc). At the time OWC were selling "G4 Modified" OEM Apple Radeon 9600 Pros (64MB) pulled from G5 towers - I don't recall how much but they were fairly cheap compared with all the Mac retail cards (I couldn't swing a 9800 Pro Mac Edition back then). Pins 3 and 11 had the gold contacts etched or scraped away.

I bought one and used it for a bit, then got into flashing - (remember all the fun / drama on the Strangedogs forum? I was lurking on there back then) and eventually bought an XFX GeForce 6800GS (STILL cheaper than a 9800 Mac Edition), modded it to a 6800GT, and flashed that with a barebones LGA 775 socket PC I built just for flashing. Then I got ambitious (stupid?) and tried flashing the Radeon 9600 over to the PC just for fun - and bricked it. I tried reflashing it several times with no success. Then chucked into a box and forgot about it.

Fast forward 19 years, and I recently rediscovered both the old PC and the 'dead' 9600 Pro in storage. I don't have a PCI video card for the PC, but it did have a DOS boot floppy with ATIflash on it still stuck in the floppy drive.

So I downloaded an OEM Apple ROM for the Radeon and was just able to successfully blind flash it! I don't know what I screwed up back then, but the card lives again. I have a dual 1.0Ghz MDD I recently acquired, and this works perfectly in that. It's a solid card if you want a higher-performance passively-cooled Core Image GPU with DVI + ADC for a faster G4 - though If I recall the 9600 series never had drivers for OS 9. But I can always pop the original Radeon 9000 back in for Classic OS gaming.
Hardly an expert-level achievement but it was a nostalgic experience!
