Just wanted to post some experience I've had recently, and ask a quick question...
I've been suffering from random icon corruption for some time on my SE/30. The memory on this machine has been expanded to 68MB - 4 x 1MB and 4 x 16MB. I've followed the gamba placement instructions (although if you don't, the machine won't start anyway (chimes of doom and simasi mac)).
Usually just after boot, and when the desktop icons have been covered (e.g., by a window, or an application), and when they are subsequently redrawn when they become visible, they almost always had a single vertical line - sometimes down the middle, but often not.
I'd also get some mouse cursor glitches (it would just turn into noise momentarily), and some bus / address errors when opening large things (e.g., websites, pictures). AppleShare transfers were also unreliable, unless I moved the data using another AppleShare machine to start the copy process.
This looks like memory I thought, so I firstly disabled MODE32. Now I've got 8MB RAM usable, and the problems go away. AppleShare transfers work, no icon corruption, better stability.
If I remove the 64MB leaving just 4MB (4 x 1MB), and then put another 4MB (4 x 1MB) in, again no problems.
So that's that. Well, no. I want the memory capacity back. 8MB just isn't cutting it
I try some reasoning. If the machine works fine with 8MB addressable, but not 68MB, then the problem is probably with the memory outside of the first four slots.
This is the 64MB that is slightly larger (in height) than the first 4MB. So I order some more, and put it in. Same thing again.
The problem was with the first 4MB all along! I've replaced that and now is all hunky dory. So my lesson - don't assume anything! This memory has been in and out, and mixed up a number of times.
I do now have 64MB kicking around - it's the same - slightly larger height - but it won't seem to fit (it's too high once the mac is reassembled).
So my question - is there any way of fitting it?
