Targa2000 temporarily laid waste to my lower 3 slots...

So I booted up the 9600 this evening and it froze before the icons appeared on the desktop, which I discovered  after I turned back around to open up Classilla and check something out. So I restarted it and this time it booted up but gave me a dialogue saying that localtalk bridge couldnt run because Appletalk was off... unusual behaviour but I decided to just go and turn it back on, however in doiing so, the AT control panel gave me a dialogue telling me that Ethernet port (E2), my PCI ethernet card, was no longer available and that it was selecting the built-in port.

I restarted it and made doubly sure the cord was in (not that it should make a difference) E2 still was offline entirely. Upon going into System profiler at that point, it became apparant why... the PCI listing only showed the TT128 graphics card, the SCSI controller card, and the USB card... everything below that didnt exist. Now the next card down in the 4th slot was the Targa board, followed by the other combined firewire/USB card and the 10/100 PCI ethernet card, so it seemed like the Targa card might be the issue... I had been having the odd freeze here and there when i would unplug or plug in the ethernet cord after I had the Targa card out last time. So I pulled it out and BAM... my lower two PCI cards are there and working as if nothing ever happened!

Any idea what is going on or anybody else had similar issues with the Targa2000 controller or with 9600's loaded with lots of gear? If it makes a difference, it also has a Sonnet G3/400-1Mb CPU upgrade installed. I recall very recently somebody mentioned a particular CPU card caused problems with the lower slots on the 9600 but I don't recall it being this particular card.

For some reason I'm recalling some other issue on some of these boards that caused slot problems. Each pair of three has its own controller.

Hmmmm that's what I was thinking, that it might be actually logic board related rather than the Targa card itself. I might actually bring the 7600 over later today and throw in the Targa card and see if it works or if it displays the same symptoms... Seems like the easiest diagnoses I guess. Unless of course the TNT board have similar issues... But I wont get that pessimistic yet! lol

Targa's A/V boards were REALLY picky about how you installed them. There was a sticker inside my "Avid Equipped" 9600 that advised me of thecard order which put my truevision second from the bottom with the Gasket at the very end of the bus. I learned pretty quickly that if you ignored this you ran into all sorts of weird problems.

Hmmmm I might  drop it down a slot in that case and try again. I was getting a fair bit of wierdness all round after I put it in so that is likely the answer... the more you know! :)
