Stupid Wallstreet Battery Questions

Hi all, super easy stupid question. I bought a Wallstreey today from a guy who hadn't used it in years, and not with the battery for longer. The battery doesn't start charging immediately when inserted, that means that it's hosed, right? I'm assuming it's dead, but didn't know if there was some goofy lead time to charge or something.

Second maybe less stupid question: if the clock isn't persisting after a shutdown that means the PRAM battery is dead, correct? Does this recharge? I've seen conflicting information in my yeoman google searches.

 
There is a procedure for jump-starting WallStreet batteries: in the righthand bay, insert battery; wait about 15 seconds; remove battery and wait about 60 seconds; repeat 10 or 20 times.

The WS will try to "burst charge," I think the expression goes, anything popped in the right hand bay under these circumstances, even before actually recognizing it as a battery.

Whether this process will revive your battery remains to be seen. Maybe not, but as a longtime WS user years back, I saw it happen several times.

The weirdness continues:

I picked up another a Wallstreet for parts, from CL, that had what I thought was a good battery. I thought it was good because when I popped it into the left bay, the lights came on on the battery itself. I left the machine on for a couple minutes, then shut it down. This was yesterday. I came back today, and the battery is dead. If I put a battery into the left bay, it shows up on the menu bar now (which it wasn't initially). When I put the same battery into the left bay nothing shows up in the bay in control strip. But removable media drives operate properly, for the most part.

Do the batteries only charge when the computer is on? Should I pull the batteries when the computer is off? I'm not sure how to google this.

 
Do you have the Battery Reset App? It basically safely discharges the battery from inside the computer. That's how I got my WS Battery working.

EDIT: If it refuses to charge even with battery resets, the cells may be bad.

I think the batteries themselves are alright as I've gotten both of them to charge at some point in the past few days.

I am able to charge both batteries in the left bay, now, after running the Battery Reset app.  Even fully charged they don't show up in Control Strip in the right bay, it just says that the bay is empty.

Is there a way to test if the PRAM battery is bad, outside of date/time not persisting?  With no battery, even after being plugged in for a long time, removing the power cord shuts the computer off.  Everything is pointing to a bad PRAM battery.  Can those be recharged, or is it hosed?

 
I'm pretty sure that once a PRAM battery dies, it's gone.

My WS also has a bad PRAM battery, or something. It takes a while (~2 minutes) to boot to a screen from hitting the power button. And the time isn't saved either. Even though I charge it up.

 
Sorry to dredge up an older thread, but I have a bunch of Wallstreet/PDQ batteries and not a single one that works.

I'm going try the "jump start" method, but can anyone suggest one of the above mentioned battery reset apps? I went hunting on the garden and couldn't find any.
