Stock G4 Cube with 20" Cinema display (A1038)?

Hi All,

Just bought some components separately to make up a G4 Cube system. After some research, it looks like the stock ATI card will not run the Cinema display. Will it not work at all, have low resolution or actually work with some magic drivers I haven't found yet?

I could upgrade the card but I need to do some more research on this. I will check the cubeowners site but thought I would ask here first. I'm not a member of cubeowners yet.

Any help is appreciated.

Well: a) you really, really want something better than a Rage 128 card in the Cube anyway, certainly if you plan to run OSX; B) something like a Radeon 7500 works well and would certainly match well with the 20" screen; or c) I could trade you a 17" studio display and a widget of your choosing for a 20" screen, one of which I have been looking for ....

I am 175kms down the 401, but if you are interested in old Mac gear, my place is a little Shanghai-La.

Thanks for the reply beachycove.

I kinda figured it would be a) Sorry it's not c). It hasn't even arrived yet nor the Cube. The 20" Cinema display also has the ADC to DVI converter/power supply (just in case) as well as being in it's original box.

Perfectly understandable!

I think the 20" screen with the Cube would be the perfect combo: not so large as to put undue strain on the power supply and associated systems, and not so small as to seem pokey.

Okay, I've found two ATI 7500 cards (thanks for pointing me in this direction):

1. ATI Radeon 7500 Video Card for Quicksilver G4 661-2581

2. Apple PowerMac G4 (ATI Radeon) 7500 Card 630-3913

Does anyone know the difference? I would prefer not to modify anything (including the faceplate if possible). There is a dizzying array of cards to choose from either ATI or nVidia but most need hardware tweaks or flashing or they don't fit. I'd just like the best card that needs no modifications.

DVI + ADC would be nice instead of VGA + ADC as I have the DVI adapter as a backup. If there any DVI + ADC cards that will work with minimal modification, that would be great!

Any help i much appreciated. I'm still on the hunt.

There are also better cards than the 7500 that will fit (some requiring more surgery than others), but any AGP 7500 with ADC port should work in a Cube without modification.

Take a look here for other options, and elsewhere on that forum for general upgrade possibilities.

Just a quick update. I installed that ATO 7500 card and it works like a champ with the 20" Cinema display. Very strange that the stock ATI Rage card would work up to 1900x1200 on a VGA monitor but it wouldn't handle the 20" Cinema. Must be a special video mode (or resolution) that the stock card can't handle. Anyway, thanks for the help beachycove. The stock video card plate wouldn't fit so I left it without and it's fine (for those who may be looking for this info in the future).

I modified the video card plate in mine just so it would be solid as the rear bracket would not affix to the back of the card I wanted at least one end screwed down.

My Cube ran for years with a Radeon 7500 and no plate. These days it is not used much at all, alas, but that may change.

I don't think the stresses without the plate are likely to cause a problem, unless you happen to have a toddler who enjoys yanking on things, or you trip over your loose ends like Stinker Pinker.
