I got a call from a friend this morning about some oversize computers in a dumpster! 30 minutes later I am in the dumpster!! 3 big servers are in there. There is a black IMB, it is a dual cpu model. The rack with three harddrives came out easy. The second server is stripped already. The third one is complete with keys sticking out of the front door. It is starting to snow!! I grabbed the third server tossed it in the car along with the three hardrives and headed back home. The three hardrives are IBM UltraStars, 18.2gb 7200rpm scsi models. The server is an older Compaq Proliant also with three harddrives. They are all IBM 1gb 50pin scsi drives. When I get time, I will test them out and if good they will be going into my compact macs. The Ultrastars will get an adapter put on them and into my 605 and Mystic. It made for a busy morning, but was great fun!!

I used to dumpster dive a lot back in the day. God that was fun. I have fond memories of raiding the bins at PacBell or the Cable people. I got tons of manuals and even some esosteric hardware. I still have the fully functional lineman's handset I found on one glorious day.
Maybe I should do it again.

Ah, man! I need to discover some good dumpsters to check on a regular basis. I can't believe some of you guys find good stuff like that.
When the summer comes around I have to go for a bike ride before the garbage truck comes around, Not too many dumpsters around here that would have anything useful in them. I might have luck in the one behind the hardware store that has a "The Source" outlet in it, Sadly the dumpster is locked...
