Hi,

which of the Macintosh models (apart from the 128, 512, 512e and Plus) worked without needing a fan?

Those are the only ones AFAIK. Dunno about the 2400, but even PowerBooks needed fans when they switched over to PCI architecture.

Slot-load iMacs don't have fans, but they do have hard disks and optical drives.

Aren't we forgetting about the G4 cube? IIRC, that machine didn't have a fan. It did have a hard drive and optical drive, though.

PCI PowerBooks have a fan, but it only comes on very, very rarely. I've never heard the fan in my Wallstreet spin up, and I've only heard my TiBook's spin up a couple of times.

Glad to hear that. I've used mine for about a year and never heard the fan - thought it might be faulty. The area under the power intake gets too hot for lap-comfort though, while charging.

IIRC all LC pizza box models were fanless.

Negative - all LCs had fans. From the original LC through to the 475. Same with all AIO LCs.

Theoretically, you probably could get away with removing the fan from an LC with no HDD, but I wouldn't recommend it. As it is the fans they used are very, very quiet.

I've run an LCIII fanless before. Wrote an essay for uni on it (c. 2008) so it ran for 8-12h per day for a week or so. No trouble.
