Setting up email, ie4.01, msm, se/30

What are you trying to connect it to? Most email providers no longer support mail clients that don't have encryption and, I'd have to get out one of my machines to look so don't quote me on this yet -- OE4 and 5 do not.

Hi Guys, thanks for replying. I had read email was difficult to get going but when I realised outlook for had SSL encryption I thought I’d give it a try. I set up a free outlook email account as that seemed simplest thing to do. Part of the problem is preferences doesn’t fit on the screen, I hadn’t thought of trying res edit. Thal i can explore as i have it on there. Maybe I’ll try to confirm the pref box issue by installing 4.01 on either my 6200 or 6500 if it’ll work. Okay dokey that gives me a few avenues to try. I’d not heard of vtools I’ll try that too
Sorry Cory i missed your question, yes connect it to outlook.com via imap but pop would be fine. The se/30 is networked to the internet. email on my se/30 was my goal once getting it online. If it isn’t possible I could go through one of my newer machines 6200/6500 of g3 imac as they’ll all on the same hub.
I'm close to 100% certain outlook.com won't work.
In terms of the screen real-estate issue, it's worth remembering that IE4/OE4 are from 1998. They barely fit in 640x480, because 512x342/384 and 640x480 weren't really the norm any more.
Newer PPC releases of most email client apps won't work either. Email just wasn't encrypted the way it is now until after all these programs stopped being developed. In addition, we're reaching the point where SSL root certificates in old browsers and network programs have expired, so even SSL resources that do or should work often throw errors.
We're even getting to the point where it's a toss-up as to whether mail.app in OS X 10.6 and older will work with any given mail provider.

Thanks for looking Cory, really appreciated it as the wife was away I've spent at least 3 hours today trying out way to try and make it work but it looks like I’m just wasting time. humm. Back to the drawing board. I do have a macmini on 10.6, currently not connected up but could I possibly use that as mini email server for my older machines?
I don't know off hand. 10.6 server had a mail server, but I never used it and don't remember what security it asks for.
I extremely recommend against this, however. You'll be opening your networks and machines up to bad misuse and there's a high possibility your resources will be misused by spammers and phishers. Plus, while a machine that does relay for another isn't strictly speaking unheard of, it's a very very uncommon setup.
So, I would recommend against thinking about running an email server unless you want, specifically, to be responsible for running an email server and all of the attendant work that goes along with it.

FWIW, if you want an SMTP e-mail client that can handle plaintext e-mail well, the freeware Musashi works well on 68k Macs against System 7.5 and later. It's better than Eudora.
