I ordered this about a week and a half ago, and it arrived today. It cost $126 shipped, and arrived in astonishingly pristine condition.

Like most 1u dual-proc servers, it has two squirrel cage fans and moves incredibly massive amounts of air, each one spins at between 7 and 9,000 RPM. I've so far only run debian linux on it, and am installing Windows Server 2008 on it. Debian ran ridiculously fast, and I presume that server08 will as well.

The specs are listed in the link, but I'll put them here anyway -

2x 2.4GHz Opterons w/ 800MHz busses, 1MB cache each

4x Kingston 512MB sticks of DDR400, Registered with ECC

No HDD, but has an IDE cable in place & 4x SATA

2x gig-e broadcom network interfaces

350wt PSU

As per use, I'm not entirely sure. I think I'll start it out running BOINC, and then maybe use some various web utilities on it, I'm not entirely sure. In any case, $126 shipped for this thing was a pretty awesome price.

In our house, anything noisy or requiring lot's power requires justification before the big red switch goes to the on position. Then once it has fulfilled it's purpose, off it goes again. I'd prefer my machines to die of thermal shock than the finances.

 
Probably not. That said, it has been suggested to me several times, and I'm aware that apparently everything but sata is fully supported, so it is fairly tempting.

When I ran preterhuman.net from my house, it was on a compaq proliant 5500 server. This was run in my bedroom. I counted 14 high powered fans in it. Kid you not it resembled a jet engine when being powered on.

 
Oh man! My old work has the 8 proc PIII Xeon 700mhz version with the fiber chanel kit. Not only does it resemble a jet engine, it sounds like its going to launch out of a rack. Theirs has two of the dual high speed fan kits. its simply crazy. Such a beast tho :D

At the community college in my net226 class we have set up a dell poweredge 5u box for various webservering, and it has 4x PIII 700s, and is surprisingly quiet. The thing is it's packed with 120mm fans that move slow but pump massive amounts of air.

My church has one of those things. It heats up the small office so quick. The heat never turns on.

 
That is a great deal for something with those specs! Server 2008 should be fine. Run a web server, webcam, file server, a game server perhaps? Many uses for that beast. If you do any rendering, that may work as well.

Yea, that is a bit loud for home use. Do you need ear protection to work in a room full of server racks? Must be very noisy.
Seems like a good deal for what you got.

 
Weird Stuff Inc.'s actual (and only) store is near where I live. If you ever have a chance, go there, cause you won't regret it. :) They have a big 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse where they stock all types of odds and ends for sale that aren't listed on the site. (Boxed Mac and PC SW, some in other languages/NIB, tons of various types of industrial equipment, and lots of other things)
