SE30 thinks there is an external drive attached

Got an SE30 going, however, it continually give a dialog box stating the disk is unrecognized and asks to reject or initialize. The icon shows an external disk drive in the warning box, but there is no external disk drive connected.

Is this a hardware or software problem? System 7.1 installed on a scsi2sd card which seems to be working ok.

If it thought it was the floppy, it would show a floppy icon.

Do you not have a floppy you can boot from?

The internal floppy is working ok.

The warning box shows a Mac with an external floppy drive next to it with the warning.

Should have clarified that

Caps have been replaced (not by me) no battery it was removed and there was no corrosion.

Is the searching for the external floppy part of the rom, software, or other hardware?

For some reason it is detecting an external floppy drive that isn't there

Maybe it's a faulty Bourns filter?

That seems to be a common cause of bizarre floppy-related problems like this.

I've had read/write problems with bourns in the past, but not this. Uniserver or technight would be the experts on that.

cc-333 is correct the problem is the bourns filter has gone bad.    its a common problem.

they go bad in a few different ways, causing oddness. i change those... but usually i suggest that if you change one, you should change all 3.  if one is starting to go bad, its probably going to start happening to the other ones as well causing other strange oddness.

(6) If solution (5) doesn't work either, replace the network filter RP2 (Bourns 4120R-601-250/201).

these filters do go bad on many other mac's as well.

Could you take a photo? I don't think I've ever seen an "external disk drive icon". What happens if you boot an earlier system from the internal floppy, like System 6?

That depends on the system it is on - if is on a Classic 9in B/W Mac, the icon I seen is the Mac icon with a little external drive next to it with an arrow pointing down the external drive. On the Mac IIcx/ci, I seen the Mac IIcx/ci with an external drive next to it with the arrow pointing down to the external drive.

This I seen on both System 6 & 7.

Sorry Indidnt take a photo, but Rlfen described it correctly. I can't take a photo now, because the problem has been fixed.

Thanks to C and uniserver, Bourne filters have been replaced and the problem is gone!

BMOW, I don't recall if it happened when I booted from the floppy. It did happen when booted from an external drive though.
