SE/30 Simms

Ah i have heard they go slower, mine has 8 at the moment and is really quick at starting. Uniserver will the rom chip be mode 32 compliant? As i'm thinking i should take you up on the rom chip offer, how much did you want for it? :)

Depending on the system, one can also turn off start-up memory tests in the Memory control panel. I think holding down option key when launching it. But the Doug ROM is pretty cool and very fitting for the SE/30.

Thanks guys. Uniserver do you keep them in stock? it defo sounds cool although ive spent a fair bit on my hobby this month my wife wont be best pleased lol next month purchase ;)

Unity im on 7.1 not sure if that one has the controls as a tempory measure?

Yep, just pm me when your ready, no big deal...

also you do get HD20 support with the rom... and a bootable from rom OS as well.    HD20 support is fantastic when used with BMOW's floppy emu.   You don't have to buy the rom simm from me... you can also buy it direct from Dougg3,  and i will send you my image for free to load up on it.

Thats great news thanks buddy :) ill happily get from you pre loaded with rom next month. I've spent a bit on my se/30 the last 6 weeks and my wife is threatening me with buying lots of shoes to value ive spent on my new hobby lol

Well you could maybe do that...  but tell her you will pick ones out for her... LOL

Mode32 does not need setting, just memory control panel needs to be switched if anything. But this is only if the machine has anything more than 12MB of RAM. Anything less does not need Mode32 as it does not cross into the that area of memory until above 12MB.

It is not that it is slower, it is the RAM Test takes longer to go. Figure at 16MHz, the RAM is being test at 8MB a minute. At 128MB - it would take about 16 minutes to test fully; 8 minutes for 64MB. But this is only for the RAM Test. In fact, some things speed up with more RAM once the system is loaded into it. And you can turn off Virtual Memory and set Disk Cache to a minimum. This will speed things up with a lot of RAM in the system.

Ive ordered 64 meg which should arrive next tuesday, i do have mode32 on my hdd so you say i need to change the control panel settings?

I'm having no luck with the "Quadcontrol" control panel with system 7.5.5

Is this a job for ResEdit ?

Ok I've found it in 7.1 with mode32 installed, it has the option for 32 bit addressing and switch for virtual memory. I was worries mode32 may have corrupted my os but it hasnt, although it doesnt allow you to switch off memory tests

Dont have res edit yet. No its for getting the se/30 online as it wont run netscape without having 7mb of spare memory, mine only has 5.5 free after os

Mode32 doesn't come into play until you have more than 8 MB RAM, not 12.
I always thought it it was either 10 or 12 megs but because the way RAM is set up on most machines, it's 8megs and then 16megs - 10 or 12 megs does not show up as an in between step except for a few rare machines (LCs and IIsi). So anything larger than 8megs needs Mode32.

Use PowerPC Checker and strip the PowerPC Code out of the Finder and System. That should free up a couple megabytes and then do the same with Netscape. This program is a godsend... (read link and download the latest on Paralel's post.)

https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/23429-a-promised-hack-is-here/

I recommend running the program to check how much PowerPC Code is bloating the system before stripping, and of course - make back ups of the System/Finder and apps before stripping them. Personally I never had a problem with it but just in case, be prepared.
