SE/30 restoration - bezel, keys and hard drive

Hi

I got a SE/30 for 10 euros 3 weeks ago. It's working and has its keyboard and mouse.

The keyboard doesn't work perfectly. Some keys don't work at all, but I started mending a few switches with just paper. So that's ok.

And the Sony 40Mb hard drive is probably dead: It spins ok, the activity led works but you can't hear the head. It tries to boot endlessly. I don't know if I should ditch it and get an SCSI2SD.

But those things aren't my immediate problem. The bezel is quite damaged. A lot.

Here are pictures showing how ruined it is:

The right corner can't be fixed I'm afraid. And on the left corner, it seems that someone tried to attack it with a knife. You can't see it that much though.

Then there's the badge itself:

the previous owner tried to clean it obviously but did more harm than good. The ink from the badge came off and as a result the whole facia got covered in ink. It took me 2 full days of washing up to get rid of the stains. But now the badge is even worse. I took the pic before I cleared the stains and now it's nearly gone (it's half as black as it is on the pic)

What do you think? Should I buy a new bezel? But I don't want to spend too much on this machine as i want to sell it.

I saved it from trash and I want it to find a new loving family by Christmas.

Thanks for your help.

That dented corner means that it's been dropped at one time in its life. If that Sony Hard drive was in the Mac at the time it was dropped, then that drive is dead.

Lets get this mad puppy howling first before doing anything cosmetic to it. Recap the Analog board and Logic boards first if that has not been done before. Clean and lube the floppy drive. And get a new hard drive.

If you do silk screening, you can restore that Mac SE\30 Badge. It's not that hard. It is in Time Font but the size fools me. Wipe down the old badge and silk screen a new one on. (Used to do it long ago.)

Hello again ;)

About this machine:

The floppy drive is good but I will service it before reassembling the machine.

The Analog board is perfect. It's actually better than the one I'm using in my SE/30.

The Logic board. I'm perplex. I've never seen those caps before. They are Surface Mounted but have no label on them. Some legs might suggest they have been replaced. There is sound and no particular bugs. 2Mb of memory is not enough though.

The CRT has some burn-in but not that obvious.

I never heard of silk screening before but I'm only 19. Now I know how writing is done on plastics! I will try that.

Maybe I can use the Garamond font? Today's Garamond is very very close to 1989's Garamond.

To remove the badge altogether, what should I use? I'm afraid alcohol might damage the plastics even more...

I will get a SCSI2SD to replace the hard drive. That will be easier I think, unless I find a cheap one on ebay...

yea Mike McMaster does a fantastic job on the SCSI 2 SD.

also maybe a BMOW Floppy Emu might be of use to you as well… and with a IIsi/Dougg3 rom in that SE/30 you could Boot to MacOS directly from ROM or HD20 Emulation with the Floppy Emu.

Hi all

I know it's been a long time, but I have good news!

Believe it or not I found on leboncoin.fr, France's Craiglist, somebody selling a bunch of mac stuff: He has an illuminated dealer sign, but also a Lisa-to-Macintosh Upgrade kit, and a complete Mac 128k Picasso kit. What's even greater is that I only paid 50 euros for all of that!

The good news is that this guy also included 6 boxes of other things, including an SE/30 bezel which has become really rare (I searched and searched endlessly since july)

So, with a bit of retr0bright, it will look like new.

I think I'm going to have a look inside the hard drive before ditching it. It's a Sony 40Mb, and I think (and hope) it looks internally like a Quantum ProDrive. I saw a couple of videos on Youtube, one from you Techknight and another one from Francesco Ferretti. I think the head is stuck, I can hear the drive spin, but no head movement. But then the computer was dropped, so it's probably hopeless.

If it's really broken, I'll try at least the scsi2sd. Thanks guys for the tips ;)

There are not so many Mac enthusiasts in France compared to the US so I don't think it will sell well with all those add ons. I'm not after the money, I just want to give the computer a new life.

But I might just go with the RAM and ROM upgrade on my own SE/30, once I get that Lapis color card working...

I'll let you know.

I knew they existed somewhere ;) 68kmla is by far the biggest and most interesting place to talk about macs. I knew some users were French.

Next time, I'll know. I will ask someone in France first. Some of my projects are on hold right now because I don't have the parts...

BTW, I told you about my Lapis video card earlier, I even wrote a post about it https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/25002-lapis-colorserver-17-30/

I'm not a wizzard and I don't know how to mend such things, do you know some place where I could have it repaired? (I am also based in Paris)

I paid 100€ for that board and it doesn't work. It is not detected by the computer...

I wanted to test it first on the one I'm restoring, I don't know it might be a problem on the other SE/30's PDS?

But I need to put it back together before that :b&w:

I'm getting the stuff I was talking about next month as the guy lives near Bordeaux...

Thanks anyway

What about printing the badge onto some laser printer water-slide decals?  Line it up with the existing badge and apply.

I might give that a go myself.

The other option is thermal color printing. Its used in the sign/printing industry for doing overlays, better alternative to screen print.

Hey guys I know it's been a long time since I created this thread. And the SE/30 is even worse now.  :(

I've found a "new" bezel. I will be cleaning and retr0brighting this thing next week (hopefully, depends on the weather). So that's not a problem anymore.

I'm still having trouble with the keyboard, AB, MB, FDD, and SCSI HD. Everything but the CRT... I bought a SCSI2SD but I'd rather keep it for myself. As I said before this computer will be sold as I already have a working SE/30 in my collection. I'm looking for an early SE with those twin floppy drives and the SCSI2SD would sit nicely in there.

So I'd like to save that HD if possible. It's probably dead but I'd like to repair it.

The symptoms: Spinning but no head activity. Incredibly hot when used for a couple of minutes! Lido says something is connected but can't be used.

So I think the controller board is okay.

Is there a way of repairing a HD with such symptoms without opening it up? I will eventually do it but I'd rather not if I don't have to.
