SE/30, MODE32, & System 7.5 - I can NOT get this to work!

OK, I can't get an SE/30 to boot with 32-bit memory addressing in 7.5.

7.1, yes, 7.5, no.  No matter what I do.

I thought maybe it was the SCSI2SD, but it won't boot off an Apple HDD or floppy disk drive.  It just freezes at the Happy Mac and won't go any further.

Any ideas?  I found another thread with someone else having the same issue, but no solution was provided.

Yes.  I just narrowed it down to MODE32 7.5.  It causes System 7.1 to freeze, as well.

Is there a different version that I should use with the SE/30?

I also can't get it to work with more than 80MBs of RAM.  If I put a full 128MBs, it gets a death chime (but only after it attempts to boot)

MODE32 7.5 is the right version to be using with System 7.5.x and it fully supports the SE/30. Earlier versions misbehave with System 7.5.x and reportedly corrupt data. My inclination is to suspect hardware here, but it's out of my scope.

If you can install 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 will have a mode 32 installed already as they bought/used it from connectix.  I agree sounds more hardware related, but maybe try without all the memory until you get the mode 32 narrowed down.

if you are running anything higher then 7.1 you will have to patch files for 7.5.3 - 8.1 to work with full 32bit rom

you could have bad traces on the mainboard too... if mode32 is not working. and ram is sadmacing above 64.  the se/30 are really a pain in my ass over all...

My SE/30 is running 7.1, so I can't help with the mode 32 issue, but I also had sad mac trouble getting max RAM to work in bank A, even after recapping (I assume that's how you're getting to 80?). I only wanted to put in 64, so I stopped trying to fix it after my 4 + 64 configuration worked, but I wondered what was causing that when other people reported getting 128 to work.

I have two motherboards that I've recapped, and both exhibit identical problems.  Same issue as you, tanaquil.  64MB in one bank, 16MBs in the other.  If I put the full 128 it won't work.  It doesn't like having both banks filled with all 16s, but it works fine if it's one bank with 16 and the other bank with less-than-16.  If I had any 8MB chips, I'm willing to bet I could get it to work with 96, but not 128.

Thought I'd mention that it works perfectly with System 7.1.1 and Apple's 32-bit Enabler.  However, the customer wants to run 7.5.5, which required MODE32.

Odd that 32-bit Enabler works fine, but MODE32 freezes.

It's not Sad Maccing above 64, it Sad Macs (and only after attempting to boot the OS) if I have both banks filled with 16MB SIMMs.  If I fill one bank with all 16s and the other bank with less-than-16, it works fine.

apples 32 bit enabler replaced mode 32.  It was the direct replacement in the memory control panel.

Again connectix just gave/sold it to apple.

I'm confused.  The SE/30 has a dirty ROM.  I'm pretty sure it needs an enabler.  There isn't one built into the Memory Control panel that I'm aware of.  There's Apple's official 32-bit Enabler, and then MODE32.  I thought I had read that Apple's 32-bit Enabler was incompatible with 7.5, which is why you have to use MODE32 7.5.

Also, without an enabler, in System 7.5 it only reports 8MBs of RAM regardless of the amount of RAM installed.  With System 7.1 it will show all the RAM, but the System will take up all but 8MBs of it.

crap its 7.6 that is 32 bit on.  7.5 is just a pain.  Very finicky.  Apple did buy mode32 and gave it away for free and when enabled the on and off is in the 7.5 memory control panel.

That's the idea, yeah.  7.1.1 and 32-bit System Enabler works fine.  I just can't get MODE32 to work on either SE/30s.

Sounds hardware related but Ill check with my 2 but I dont have max memory so I probably wont have the same issue.

I'm quickly running out of SE/30s to test.  It's odd that I'd have the exact same problem on different machines, though.
