SE/20 doesnt show internal HD

Hi guys!

I have two SE/20 (with internal hd) and last week I decided to wake them out of their eternal (almost) sleep.

The problem I discovered was that no one of them sees the internal hd.

After trying to replace them, no luck, I put the orginal hd in an external scsi enclosure and now it works.

So I suppose something is wrong with the internal connections for the HD, any ideas on where to start looking?

The SE´s are in good shape otherwise and the HD arnt that noisy either....

power to the hard drive may be waning.

Do a test at the cable to see if  the voltage is there.  The fact you put the drive in its own powered enclosure and it works leads me to believe the power supply is getting ready to fail.

you should be getting both +5 and +12 volts to the hdd.  Without the +12v, I don't think the hdd motor will spin up.

Could be a power supply issue.  Also the se's pcb caps should be changed as well.

Why is it strange?  Capacitor failure is a common issue - and can cause problems like this.  It happens!

Sounds like a common failure on the 12 volt rail. The SE power supplies are over twenty years old and were failing 10 years ago. Feel lucky they work at all at this point.

Just tinkered around with the first SE yesterday and after loosening the 4 pin power cable from the board and reattaching it again, the hd booted up nicely!

Moving on to the second, I measured both 5 & 12v on the 4 pin but questionable movement on the hd.

Think I need to try to move it to the external case and see if it spins up there.

Turned out that the second hd just needed some tlc in a external case to get it moving.

Maybe the internal power supplr doenst have enough amps to get old hd moving but once theire kicked back to life, the startup dont need all the power?
