SCSI port power

I've been tinkering again with my Color Classic, putting an LC575 with full 68040 and a Comm Slot plus 64 mb ram in the little thing. For years it's had an LC550 board in there, but I decided just to see what difference an 040 made in usage.

Connecting an external drive to the SCSI port, however, led to peculiar behaviour: the green power LED flickered constantly, as if the power were marginal. The drive was also not recognized.

Does a drive connected to the rear SCSI port draw power in a quantity that would explain this behaviour? I would have thought the additional power required would be marginal, given the external power supply in the drive itself.

The bus itself doesn't consume power but the termination power does however it is a very small amount.
