SCSI CD recorder for Performa 6116

Hello,

i would like to change my apple internal 4x scsi cd rom on my performa 6116 with a fast cd recorder. I would like fast reading speed, not (necessarily fast writing speed) and to be able to boot from the drive. Any suggestions?

Well, unfortunately SCSI CD-RW drives are ridiculously expensive right now.  However, I did find this:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hewlett%20Packard/C6020I/

Now it's not super fast.  It's only 6x read and 2x write, but it is advertised as Mac Bootable, it's brand new, and it's only $13.

It doesn't have a bezel, but that should be find since you're installing it internally in your 6116.

It's hard to beat $13. On the other hand, if you get a SCSI to IDE adapter (and possibly an IDE to SATA adapter, too), you can use pretty much any new DVD or Blu-Ray drive out there.

But newer drives would not be bootable for certain.

Also drivers for newer drives would need a third party driver and may not work well, or at all.

Acard adapters work fine, and anything newer than a certain age will work with pretty much any software. I used an IDE DVD burner as a bootable drive for a Quadra 800 via an Acard adapter (UW-SCSI to IDE with UW to narrow adapter), and although I didn't try booting, I did connect a SATA Blu-ray burner to that same machine and it mounted CDs and DVDs, although it wouldn't mount Blu-ray discs.

I have a similar question, though as I won't be running OS 8.6 or higher, I'm not sure olePigeon's recommended drive from OWC is a solution for me. I may need to swap out the SCSI CD-ROM drive in my Performa 630 (hopefully running OS 8.1 eventually). Can I replace it with pretty much any SCSI CD-ROM drive or must it be one that is specifically Apple-blessed? Thanks in advance.
