I have a Power Macintosh / PowerPC 5200/75LC that won't boot past a certain point.
It powers on and begins to boot, but before anything appears on the screen it plays the sad chime. I did post about this a couple months ago but may have been in the wrong area of the forums, sounds like "LC" Macs spanned a couple generations. I've already tried a few troubleshooting steps, but wonder if anyone has been stuck at this same spot?
The internal battery has been replaced (it was nearly dead, well below spec), and I've tried a couple reset commands on the keyboard but honestly I don't think the computer is listening for kb input, they don't seem to do anything. (Cmd+Option etc commands have me confused with Macs though, tbh, I never understand the instructions the way they're written.) I'm also not surer whether the monitor or HDD are working. I don't hear the high-pitched CRT sound often associated with CRT's. I can hear something spinning but I don't know what the HDD *should* sound like, and again, if it's even being fired up yet at this point in the boot process.
Additionally, after cleaning the logic board of light dust, and taking apart much of the EM shielding around the PSU, I see no physical evidence of anything wrong. Of course, there doesn't have to be anything visible, but just to note that I don't see goop under any of the caps.
Can anybody help me diagnose this so I know what to address? This 5200 was working the last time I used it 15+ years ago, and has been sitting inside ever since.
