Today I found two P4 systems in the hall before I went home:

System 1:

ATX case with missing side

Intel P4 motherboard with P4 2.53 ghz processor, heatsink/fan

No drives or memory

Dead power supply

AGP video card

System 2:

Shuttle case without drive cage or case cover

Pentium 4 2.4 ghz processor with ICE cooler

Power supply

PCI sound card

Both systems work with added memory and in the case of system 1 a replacement power supply.

A while back I picked up another Shuttle from the same location. Too bad I didn't keep the cover. :(

Normally the conquests around here are few and far between - Mac conquests especially so.

Considering before these two computers the fastest one I had was a P3-1ghz I'm really happy right now....

That's what I am hoping for.

A friend of my wife has been unloading spare PC parts on me and just gave me a 40GB hard disk tonight. Wheeeee! [:D] ]'>

I'm getting my spare P4 ready for sale, it's in quite crappy condition but works, it's a gourmet in tastes of RAM, though, I keep getting POST beeps with all of my PC-133/100 sticks. I'm gonna take Q-tips, dip 'em in rubbing alcohol, and rub them over the RAM stick's contacts, then stick them in the slot to see if it cleans anything off.

The board with the 2.53 ghz chip has decided totally on its own not to boot. It may be the power supply I'm using but I don't have a spare just yet.

The Shuttle has XP on it for now.

Ubuntu is definitely a possibility. I have used prior versions without too much trouble. Mandriva and OpenSUSE are also possibilities.

This morning I jury-rigged a drive cage and cover out of card stock to help with cooling the system. It helped quite a bit with noise as well.

After connecting another power supply to the faster P4 it started right up.

Now to get enough parts to make it useful.
