Is the Yikes the first one? I thought the Sawtooth was first. I meant whichever one was the first G4 after the B&W. I thought the Yikes just used a modified B&W motherboard, that's why I thought they'd be similar enough to rehouse a B&W into the case.
They were concurrent - the Yikes was the bottom end and reused the G3 logic board (i.e. PCI graphics). The Sawtooth used a new board, new CPU socket, and AGP graphics.
My answer is rather hypocritical because I am building a Blue & Silver G3 as well as a Black & White G4. The process is *very* time-consuming and I'm running a big rishḱ in breaking something, shorting something or simply invoking karma.
That being said, CircuitBored's advice is the simplest & best. B&W G3s are relatively easy to sell because lots of people love the colour scheme and it is not at all a bad Mac OS 8.6/9.1 machine. It's also very expandable.
Sawtooths (Sawteeth?) are also relatively easy to buy. In fact, you may even be able to organise a swap with a member on the fora here for teh cost of shipping.
