For the last twenty-five years, 1MB SIMM affliction was the bane of my existence, as were the 256k Keyfobs that preceeded them. I had to beg a set of 'fobs for testing in the IIsi a few years ago and now I've got another set in the craiglisted SE  .  .  .

.  .  .  and I'm rummaging through the boxes looking for an unaccounted for quartet of the 1MB variety only to find bags and bags of the "good ones" I've been hoarding.

So it goes. :

Oh, and these are the 8 chip types; guaranteed to work in the SE (I used them there)

Found a nice set (Fujitsu?) and get that wonderful "BING!" and the even better Radius Accelerator 16/881 splash screen.  [] ]'>  Now it's on to HDD/System setup and compatibility testing. But that's for the conquests thread. This one is about the trials an tribulations of not having the stuff you need on hand when you suddenly have the need, or worse, knowing you just have to have it somewhere and  .  .  .

Thanks for the offer, T, but unnecessary. Sorry, lots of empty sockets to fill so not selling. I almost never sell anything anyway, I trade for stuff I still want for the stuff in the hoard I have in quantity or have lost interest in at this stage of the game.

Though I have been known to occasionally give stuff away locally to clear cubic and workspace.

I have a small box with 1MB SIMMs (mostly 8 chip and some 9 chip). The non parity ones don't work on old PCs.

My problem is all my 4MB SIMMS (and I have quite a few) are in use and I only have 8 or so 16MB ones.

Also have a few 256K ones around if I ever want that stock look for an SE.

I managed to get lucky, and find 4 16MB SIMMs in what would have otherwise been an ordinary SE/30.

I should have said 8 or so spares. I have a bunch more inside machines. I did have 128MB in a SE/30 but it was kind of a waste so I went to 32MB. I did stuff one Q950 with max ram for the heck of it.

128MB in an SE/30 really is overkill, even 68MB in my SE/30 is wayy overkill. Without some sort of accelerator or video card, the machine in its stock form really can't justify using 128MB of RAM. I guess if you are a NetBSD junkie (which I am to a degree), then the large amount of RAM might make a significant difference.

Found the pet IIfx with 32MB and went back to buy the rest. They only had 8MB. :-/   Those fell prey to hacks, losses in the move south and then in the storage room whirlpool. My 32MB pet is all that remains of the IIfx stack.

32MB is plenty for anything I've ever wanted to do.

Large amounts of RAM help if you are messing with large publishing and photo editing files. Don't forget Powermac 8500's shipped with something like 16MB of RAM. We tend to over stuff these machines with large amount of RAM and HD space because we can now (and do it somewhat cheaply).

Yeah, I've given up on the notion of maxing everything out due even to current pricing levels for 16MB SIMMs. One day I'll take the SIMMspender™ hack up again. Got a drill cute little 8" Harbor Freight bench top drill press on sale last week for HackLabNC™ after having wanted to replace the drowned one for just about eleven years. Bought a 10" at first, but it's going back, it was HUGE by comparison.Time to start etching some boards to drill!

It's too bad most of the current projects really should be wire wrapped. :-/

RATS! Forgot about looking for and setting aside a matched set of 4MB SIMMs for the SE/30 when the time comes to button it up. Oh well. :-/
