Radius TPD II Nubus Card Specs and Sync

Just optained a nice Q650 with a Toby and Radius TPD II Card. I have not found any specific info about the card. I guess, it is a 1-bit card and runs at 1152x870 as this is the standard apple two page resolution. however, I can‘t get it to run without a greenish screen. I am using the 2 row 8 dip adapter and tried 1152x870 with setting for sync on green, comp. sync and separated sync. Still only showing nicely green…..

Any ideas?

You need to tie red/blue/green together at the monitor cable end to output Black and White from the card if you have the same problems I had hooking up the SE version of the Radisu TPD

Date on the card suggests single bit, but that DA-15 connector shows at least the tiniest bit of hope for GS. Older units had coaxial hookup:

Still need to get it set up for black on white, hopefully that's only a question of tying RGB inputs together at the VGA end of things, but my LCD success should give hope to others with SE cards dedicated to proprietary displays. After the Adjust in Progress screen dropped away, some patience...

@Trash80toHP_Mini thanks for the link to your post. the mac rescue of denver was the only reference that I‘ve found as well. Let me see whether i can cheat a VGA cable to combine RGB to one.

Radio Shack used to sell a plug and play version of these nifty gadgets, sockets on the board and pin terminated wires:


Enlarge image for detail of the two part metal shrouds. I was able to remove the outer halves and cut pins down to DA15 configuration with a hacksaw. If you can't remove it you can cut the shroud down. Then again if you have the likes of that newfangled Dremel tool abomination, that might work almost as well. Only one lockdown on the cable will work, but that's the way I'd splice RGB together and any sense lines that might need to be implemented.

Here's another one, but the shroud doesn't appear to be split into halves like the one I suggested. The halves appear of to be swaged at the lockdown holes, so drilling them out a bit may free the outer part of the shroud with ease?

TLDR story from the day: I'd bought a Griffin cable that was supposed to drive Portrait and TPD, but only did TPD. One of the engineers picked up the phone at Griffin (those were the days!) and I swear he closed his eyes and worked out the pinout adaptation with me then and there in his head. There are pictures of it lost here somewhere. When I get home tomorrow I'll try to find it.

Thanks for the valuable input. Thinking of this one from Amazon - guess it will work. Also checking for the pin outs for DB9 equipped cards like the Miro Prisma nubus graphics adapter. But sadly, DB9 was not standardized unlike DB15 Mac or VGA.

The good old days when dealers/resellers and manufacturers really knew about their products. Miro was quite famous in germany, as well as Formac. Today, it is hard to find anyone having any knowledge about those vintage products. Almost 27 years I was involved in 604e, 604ev (r), G3 and G4 CPU upgrades and I kept almost all my documents until I moved and now can‘t find them anymore - guess I am not the only one.

Very nice! You can do your DE15 VGA conversion and Portrait Adaptation in one shot. What are you using on the 13w3 connector of the Portrait? Cut one of these in a convenient place and you can work out your adaptation to VGA on a prototyping PCB. When you've got it working cut out the PCB and splice the wires/shrink wrap for a nice clean cable.

Not using 13w3 at all as I only have the TPD 2 card, not the display. I am trying to get it run on a Dell 22“ TFT that works quite well with all those old video signals from Toby, Futura SX etc….. I only have a 15“ Nokia Multisync Trinitron CRT, a bunch of Apple 13“/14“ and an Apple 16“ fixed frequency ones.

Apple Portrait Display & Macintosh SE

I thought I vaguely remembered seeing Macintosh SE's connected to Apple's Portrait Display monitor. But it's possible I'm thinking of an SE/30 or a Radius monitor, not Apple's. Anyone know if a video card exists that allows a Macintosh SE to drive an Apple Portrait Display?
