Sorry a system error occurred."Finder"

__floating point coprocessor not installed.
I get this error when I try to do a screen shot. This was never a problem before yesterday. I haven't removed and re-seated it . . .

. . . bombing resumed after I wriggled the FPU up, down and around in its socket a bit. :/

I sure hope the answer is Caps! :(

I guess it's time to button up the pet IIfx, at least I have a few other Macs to play with until this is somehow resolved. ;)

I think you are ready to host a " Cap-Party " Buy the pizza and beer, Have your buddies over and get a bunch of your machines re-capped in the process.

I had a LC-III that would not see the FPU until all of its caps had been replaced.

Hi,

Doesn't the IIfx have mainly tantalum capacitors from the factory? I haven't looked at mine for awhile, but it seemed that there were only two of the little surface mount things, and they deal with the power on circuit. They have nothing to do whatsoever with the FPU, from what I can tell.

I guess it's worth a try, though?

I've never had a IIfx,

However, mcdermd got one not too long ago. he was having issues, forget what the issue was… (maybe he can chime in)

I suggested he pop out the fpu and cpu, and re inserting them and it started working,

The IIfx makes alot of heat, expansion and contraction, FPU/CPU socketed, Ahem appleIII :-)

Its the fastest 030 apple ever sold, that is why I want one.

Also there is some radial caps on there, I do not see any tantalum caps.

The pet IIfx is all buttoned up for the time being, I even turned it around for the first time in what seems like ages. It was fun playing with the NuBus Cards in there so it's tuschie toward me was really convenient, but looks pretty darn good from the front!

I've got the Dock+ sitting on top of it ATM, one of empty IIsi is doing a handsome job of holding up the Portrait for a while. Just gotta put a longer 1/2" carriage bolt leg onto the Luggable Shelf so I can get it back into position. I'll revisit the the socketed ICs another time, lately anything I touch has turned or burned into something other than gold. The Q700 still reeks, but the apartment is free of the stench of the magic smoke . . . for the time being. [}:)] ]'>

It's DuoTime! [:D] ]'>

Suggestion beyond resetting the FPU and CPU:

Clean the socket/pins with electronic contact cleaner. That stuff does wonders for me whenever my 68k Macs get oddly flaky. My Q800 started to crash regularly with gibberish errors, and they have all tantalum capacitors. Turns out, the RAM sockets and the pins on the RAM wire dirty. A spray of contact cleaner in the sockets and on the SIMMs, and it works as good as new. (You know, my IIfx could probably use this treatment too, it likes to lock up if left alone for too long)

I bought my can at an automotive store. Make sure its plastic safe, fast evaporating, no residue type.
