Quicksilver G4!

Where are you people at that you are sticking slower RAM in higher speed machines?

Some PC-66 modules will work. It depends on if they have an SPD chip. If not, then it more than likely is not going to work.

Basically its a case of, "If I run out of faster RAM, or I have bigger slower RAM than I do smaller bigger RAM" for me, as I assume it would be for others.

These didn't have an SPD chip.

For what it's worth the physical ram ceiling of a QuickSilver is actually 2 gigs, and OS X can address and use that much, the stated limit of 1.5 gigs was for the benefit of Mac OS 9, which could only address that much.

I've also got to agree that it would probably be best to stick to the proper ram speed of your machine where possible, although Ive got a few PC100 systems with PC133 in them.

Other than that though, congrats on the QS! I'll admit that the QS has long been one of my favorite models of G4. (Even if it is really only a cosmetic update from the digiAudio [:P] ]'>)

....What you say also makes no sense because if the system bus drops, so does the speed of the CPU, the drives, and everything else that depends on the bus for it's timings. Putting a PC100 stick in a 533 Digital Audio (which I have never gotten to work anyway) would lower it to a 400mhz machine if your logic follows.
Most systems can and many do run the CPU front side bus at a different speed then the memory.

"Cosmetic upgrade"? This is actually one of the more uglier products I've seen of Apple. I don't like the front at all. :p

Really? I actually really like the QS. Of course, it's no MDD -- but it's arguable that the whole PowerMac G4 line left a bit to desire, cosmetically. [;)] ]'>

The QS is good looking. It's that damned MDD tower that should never have happened. The hardware was great. The mirrors were not.

I still like my old sawtooth I used to have.

Favorite of the entire case series is the B&W. Mine still looks good.

At first, I personally hated the QS design. But once I saw one IRL, I actually really liked it. :)

To anyone who can help...

I just tried adding four 512MB PC2700 DDR 333MHz DIMMs in my PowerMac G4 (Mirrored) Dual 867 and it wouldn't start up (recognize them). I'm under, or was under, the impression that the PC2700 can ride on this model of Mac.

On the Apple support page it says for the 133 MHz system bus model (The one I have) that, "When only PC2700 or a Mix of PC2700 and PC2100 DIMMS is installed the computer starts up normally and behaves as though PC2100 DIMMs are installed."

So after reading that I took out one of the new DIMMs and added back my original PC2100s and it started up but apparently in and from The About This MAC I still only have my original PC2100 with three empty slots.

So I ask, are the 512MB PC2700 DDR 333MHz DIMMs no good in my 133MHz model or am I doing something wrong? Can they be recognized or did I get the wrong model of Dimm? HELP.

I also got an IOGear Hi-Speed 5-Port USB 2.0 PCI Card and I can't really tell if it's working in the sense of 2.0. I mean it working on the iPod I connected but it could be rolling on 1.1, no? How do I confirm this?

When I mention the About This Mac info, does that change with the ading and removing of devices and or what not or does it stay as is from stock? I would imagine it changes to show what is added or removed right?

Sorry for the rookie questions but when it comes to this stuff like adding memory or what not I am, BIG TIME.

Any quick answers will be greatly appreciated.

The big problem with newer faster speed memory in older machines seems to be the density of the RAM. I have tried some PC133 in my B&Ws and some doesn't work at all, some shows up as half of what it should be, and some works just fine.

Quicksilvers looks nice, but I think I like the less glitzy DA's more. Someday I will have the last OS 9.1 native booting G4 made (when they are freecycle finds probably).

2GB of RAM is decent even today, its nice to be able to stuff that much into older systems.

I was told today by the tech that I should try inserting one PC2700 512 Dimm at a time. They say they're backwards compatible.

So there you go, otherwise it's back to the shop for them.

f it, they, work(s), next on the agenda is finding out if the IOGear 2.0 USB PCI card is running at 2.0 or 1.1 because I couldn't find it in the profiler even though it was accepting an iPod. and apparently running faster than it was in the USB 1.1 slots.

Mac no matter how you look at it is DOPE.

Actually, according to mactracker, it says the limit on the QS was 1.5gb. Oddly, the sawtooth, and gig ethernet models could do 2.0gb under OS X, or 1.5gb under OS 9. Then, starting with the cube, and continuing through the DA and QS series, the limit is 1.5gb. then the MDD brought back the 2gb ceiling. Unless the app is wrong. I wonder why they took it out...and I wonder if you dual boot 9 and X on those rigs if you can leave in the full 2 gigs and just have the last 512mb ignored under 9...

-digital ;)

I noticed that my former Cube and this QS have only 3 RAM slots; I haven't had any MDDs, but I'm guessing they have 4 slots, each with a max. capacity of 512MB. That would explain the 1.5GB limit on the QS and Cube (and possibly others).
