Oh, so that is what the sheet feeder is for! I see them on ebay fairly often and they sell for semi-high prices. I thought it had something to do with feeding a larger amount of paper at a time.
I was checking Amazon and some other office supply stores and it seems you can readily get tractor feed paper but you have to buy an enormous box (2300 sheets or more) for $30-40, I didn't find anything smaller. (One cheaper $18 1000-sheet source on Amazon but some reviews complain paper is too thin.) Still, that would probably last me the lifetime of any of my dot matrix printers and beyond. I haven't gotten around to getting any of my several dot matrix printers running.
I never had an ImageWriter. But don't they have a serial connector that can hook right up to most Pre-USB Macs? My first Mac printer was a StyleWriter that went with my 7200/75.
As for the ribbons being dried up, you never know. If they are sealed they mail still have some life in them. I took my MPS-1200 out of storage from the 90's and it still printed fine on the ribbon that was in there. My Star NX-1000 Rainbow still has a star ribbon that came with the printer that works great.
If I am not mistaken it is still possible to get freshly made ribbons for the IW2, color even.
You can use normal paper in the Imagewriter II if you're printing one sheet at a time. Most of the printing I've done with the IW 1 & 2 has been with regular paper
