hi :b&w: .. im new to this forum and i have some questions about a quadra 605.

the hard disk on this quadra just dead but i make a backup on my g4 mac, now i have another disk but i cant write to it in the G4, i cant format it in the g4, just i can see the contents of the disk.. but i cant unmount it.. the same happen with the old disk of the quadra i can read the contents of the disk but no write things to it.

it a problem of Mac OS 10.4 ? i cant see the disk if i boot on OS9 (i think i need some scsi driver for the card).

i just want to make the quadra work with all old software..

ps. Sorry for my bad english.. my first language is spanish (hola!) ..

thanks for any help

Latest OS for Quadra 6.0.5 was 8.1 (I think) and it can't use the new fangled HFS+.

Install OS on Quadra using CD-ROM drive connected to Quadra.

You will need to install a new system on the Q605, and if what you need is access to files on X.4 machine, you will need need System 7.6.1 or 8.1 on the Quadra. Tthe latter will indeed read HFS+, but the key thing is having the right Appleshare version installed on the Quadra, and the right version of Open Transport. Assuming you have these, 7.6.1 will work fine, assuming you have all the add-ons. (I do not know whether it can be done from 7.1 or 7.5, but I doubt it.)

I mount the drive on my x.4 iMac G5 regularly from Quadras running 7.6.1 and 8.1. Everything works as expected.

There are full instructions and downloads over on www.system7today.com .

Therre was a similar discussion here. Given that ethernet is the connection and TCP/IP the protocol, OS 7.6.1 and up can chat to OS 10.4.x, as beachycove has written. However, Tiger is choosy about the OSes that it will connect to, and knows nothing about AppleTalk.

My experience with 7.6.1 and Tiger on my LAN is that with the downloads and instructions from System7Today the 7.6.1 system will connect to Tiger just fine, but the 7.6.1 machine needs Shareway IP installed for the Tiger system to connect to it.

I thought 68k Macs could read HFS+ drives, they just can't boot from them.

Read the wrapper, yes, but no further. Remember the 'Where_have_all_my_files_gone?' response when a mounted HFS+ disk is 'opened'? And thence the reason that they cannot boot from an HFS+ drive.

From memory, so forgive lapses. The ability to use HFS+ volumes with a 68K Mac is dependent on three things:

1. Ability to boot Mac OS 8.1 or later

2. Hard disk partition size (4GB for 68K Macs running Mac OS 8.1?)

3. Existence of HFS+ wrapper -- OS X does not write the wrapper

None of which I believe addresses the original problem.

Hola, Leosadvs. How are you connecting your SCSI drives to your G4? Are you using a physical SCSI connection or a network AppeShare connection?

thanks for all the answers!.. .

Charlieman: i connect the disc using a physical conection, my G4 (10.4.11) have a scsi card. but i get an error "cant Write data to the disk" when i try to copy some file on the disk and " cant unmount the disk" if i try to verify or format it.

and this happen with any of the scsi disk i have.

i downloaded the floppy images of the os 7.5.3 from the apple page to install the system

:b&w:

I really would not attempt to build a disk using OS X to boot 68k machine.

You may actually have better luck creating a set of floppies using Basilisk-II.
