Presto Plus in My Color Classic

I just bought it and Installed it. The software for the card in 7.6.1. It keeps giving me the X through the Sonnet Presto startup.... Can Anyone help?

Thanks

Jim

perhaps similar to the tips Sonnet Customer Service mailed me for my Crescendo/Sonnet Processor (20th anniversary macintosh) :

Here's a real low tech tip that often solves the problem. Take our card out of the L2 cache slot and clean the gold contacts with a clean pencil eraser. Sometimes a film gets on them from the manufacturing process and this can cause a freeze. Blow out the L2 cache slot with some canned air if you have it.

Lastly, It sounds as if you may have an extensions conflict. Please try this test, and let me know the results. This will tell us if it's bad hardware or bad software that is the issue.

Extension Test:

-Boot the computer with extensions off.

-Once the computer is booted to the desktop; Create a new folder on the desktop (call it temp).

-Go to extensions folder, select all, and drag the extensions to the temp folder on desktop.

** OS 8.5 and up - move Crescendo/Sonnet Processor Upgrade and Text Encoding Converter back to the Extensions folder.

** OS 8 or 8.1 - move Crescendo/Sonnet Processor Upgrade, Appearance Extension, and Text Encoding Converter back to the Extensions folder.

** System 7.6.1 and earlier move only the Crescendo/Sonnet Processor Upgrade extension back to the Extensions folder.

**Important: Do not use Extensions Manager or Conflict Catcher™.

-Shut down the computer.

-Disconnect from any network.

-Disconnect any scsi devices.

-The only devices that should be attached at this time should be the Monitor, Keyboard, and the Mouse.

-Now restart the computer and Zap the PRAM (Option+command+"P"+"R") Listen for 4 start-up chimes then release the keys.

-If your computer completes the boot up process without crashing or freezing, then more than likely it is a software conflict. By reloading the extensions a few at a time into the extensions folder, you can discover which extension is causing the conflict. When you know that, simply reinstall the conflicting extension from its original installer disks.

-If the extension is part of a software package, you may need to reload the software. To do this, you must first completely remove any affected software from your system. After all traces of the application are removed, then re-install the software as if you were installing it for the first time. This should clear up the problem. If you are still having trouble with the software, you may need to contact the manufacturer of the conflicting software, and ask them if there is a known conflict with G3 processors.

Possible extension conflicts:

1) Screen Savers

2) Font Managers (ATM, Suitcase, etc.)

3) Performance Enhancers (Speed Doubler, Ram Doubler, etc.)

4) Fax or Scanner drivers/extensions

5) Utility software (Norton Filesaver or Crashguard, Virus protection, TechTool Pro, Conflict Catcher, etc.)

***note***

The above extensions are compatible, but have been known to sometimes cause difficulties during the installation process. If you have any of the above extensions, you should remove them for the time being. You may reinstall them, with the Crescendo/Sonnet Processor Upgrade installed and active, at a later date, when the computer is stably running.

****Very important**** If RAM Doubler is on the computer, use the original installation disk to un-install Ram Doubler. Do not just delete the program. Once the computer is stable with our product, then you may re-install RAM Doubler.

What software driver are you using, Sonnets website has the original presto driver and not the correct one for the plus (I went through the same BS untill I talked to their tech support).

PM me with your email and I will send what I have to you.

I got it, I called Sonnet up and they emailed me the right software. Now My Color Classic is screaming!!! (Well for an 040) [:D] ]'> I'm happy I got the little guy a faster brain.... Now my next question; I have a SCSI apple external cdrom, can I swap out the drive and put a 24X in it's place? I burned my CC HDD to CD but my CC cd Rom won't read it B/C it written at 4X and the apple cdrom is probably 1X, it's from 1995...

burning speeds vs reading speeds shoudln't matter - I've read disks burnt at 24x on my 1x PowerCD before, it worked fine. However, with the older drives, you MUST use a CD-R disk, and NOT a CD-RW. I'd say you've probably used a CD-RW, which these older drives can't read.

You can swap any 5.25" 50 pin SCSI drive into that enclosure.

It also is a bit tricky to make CDs bootable sometimes. I usually use Toast while booted in Mac OS 9 or earlier. This allows you to ensure that the system folder is blessed, and also I believe there may be a CD-ROM driver that the CD burning software must hide on the CD. (Not 100% sure on that one, though, all you may actually need is a blessed system folder.)

"Blessed" means that the system folder has the Mac OS icon on it.

Within OS X its getting difficult as long as You need a classic system as a minimum. To be honest: I never managed to get a bootable installation CD from OS X because You need to install a "system for all Macs" on a disk image - and a G5 or Intel Mac simply refuses to start this operation because of CPU incompatibilities. So I fear You do have to use at least a dual boot machine.

Nevertheless this guide should be of some help if You fail to use Toast (in fact that Toast functionality never worked very well for me):

Hi! It's my first post here. I'm also new to the Mac community, since it was not possible for everybody to buy a Mac in my country, Greece. Only if you were an artist or lawyer (that means a lot of money), you would spend 3.000$ or more for this. Anyway...

2 weeks ago I bought the same card too for my LCIII and i have the exact same problem with the disabled extension. I disabled everything except from the Presto extension, but the problem persists. I always see the red X on top of the 040 icon during boot. It is the one with the ethernet, isn't it? Would you be so kind and send me this driver? I would appreciate. I emailed Sonnet about this, but i don't know when (or if) i get an answer. I can't call them, its too expensive from here.

The installation disk says v3.2 on the sticker. Sonnet's site mentions v3.1. Let's hope it is just the wrong version for the LC.

Regards!

Hi guys. I thought i sould let you know. I just got an answer from Sonnet.

The 32bit mode was Off and i had to turn it on. Now my LC really rocks!!!!

Regards

I've never made a bootable OS 7/8/9 CD in Mac OS X before either. You should be able to copy an existing CD or burn a bootable image, but making something custom in Mac OS X that's still bootable seems to be at least very difficult.

...I still cannot read CR-R in my 6X reader...
What worked for me recently was CAREFULLY cleaning the top lens only. Could read CDROMS but not CD-Rs before cleaning on multiple drives. Cleaned them all, now they all work. The plastic lens will accept a carefully placed small drop of distilled water from a wet swab. Let it sit to dissolve what it will then absorb with a dry swab. Repeat for a total of 4 times using a fresh swab each time. On the very last time only, wipe the surface exceeding gently, (dragging just the weight of the swab, no pressure) with the damp swab that has absorbed the last drop to pick up any solids. Then absorb any residual tiny drops with a dry swab, do not let them evaporate in place. There are multiple other optical surfaces that can attract haze, but they are impossible to safely access.

Follow Wally's excellent advice very carefully. Hopefully, that will solve your problem. If not, you should know that not all CDR media is alike, so not all CDRs are readable in all drives. Some drives will read only discs of a certain type. The discs themselves may be perfectly readable by other drives. Early drives had serious problems working with discs from a variety of vendors, and even the newest ones will occasionally balk at discs of a certain brand.

If you used off-brand discs, the probability of compatibility problems goes up markedly. Drive manufacturers often use Taiyo-Yuden discs as their standard, and so T-Y discs tend to have the fewest problems. You may have to re-burn that disc onto different media, or replace the drive, to enjoy compatibility with a wider variety of media.
