PowerPC G4 update crash & burn

I'm an apple newbie, so bare with me. Several months ago I purchased a PowerPC G4 with Mac OS Tiger 10.4 install(no software). It worked fine until my PPC installed the latest updates. After a reboot, I got a black screen asking me for a login name, I have none. I have tried everything to get my PPC back to normal to no avail. I even purchased retail software & restore disk for a PPC g4 but the optical drive will not read any of the disk. With or without the disk my PPC boots up into the Tiger OSX intro. and as far as I have gotten was the "select the keyboard" and it freezes. So I can not restore or even do a fresh install. Can someone help me?

Do you have an external optical drive? It should be able to boot the Tiger DVD from that. As far as clearing the password, when the welcome screen appears from booting the disc there is a menu item to clear the password.

I don't know how much this helps....

Thanks guys, I have to purchase an optical drive asap. And yes I did think about the hd. I have a 160gb hd, but I can not boot from the cd with the optical drive that came with my PPC or the DVD+RW drive I pulled from an old PC.

well the dvd+rw might not be surported the older towers are finicky about which drive they wnat to boot from especially older drivers newer drivers are easier to boot from

i bought a lite on dvd writer in 2005 and my G4 tower booted just fine off it

the update might have borked the compatibility between the drives and your mac ( unlikley but entirley possible )

your cd's might be damaged

or your hd is hosed

i think the first two are more likley

oh btw check your ram

a broken ram moduel can play al kind of havoc my quicksilver refused to complete its install because of a broken 128 mb stick

Yeah, that is weird. If it requires password now, it should have required a password to do the update, I would think.

If you have the retail DVD, and a DVD reader, you can either boot from the DVD and find the menu item to reset the password, or reinstall the system completely. I think I would first set a new password, and then reinstall the system. I think there is an option to "Archive and Reinstall" or something like that, to keep your old stuff but to just install a fresh copy of the system.

Keep us posted.

Sorry for the delay... I do have a retail copy of OS X Tiger. My problem is that I can not boot off of it. I used the optical cdrom drive that came with it and when that did not work I tried a dvd+rw and a dvd-rom drive. The disk still will not boot. And to add, I held down the "C", I tried several of the switches, I even did the Pram thingy and It still did not. Someone please tell me if I am over looking something because I still get the OS X Tiger intro with the "Welcome" in different languages, the "Getting Started with OS X Tiger" intro, it gets to the "Select a Keyboard" and freezes when it reached the part where I have to choose my country.

sounds like faulty ram then

my quicksilver decided to die halfway through an instakllation each time until i yanked out a 128 mb module which turned out to be defective

have you tried pulling the ram yet ?
