Powerbook 530c networking system 7.6.1

I just bought an old Powerbook 530c to use to transfer files across to the MacPlus, works great. The powerbook has an ethernet adapter which I've connected to my local network but the installed system (7.6.1) doesn't seem to have any networking components installed. The powerbook didn't come with the system disks, so I can't use those.

I can get a copy of system 7.6.1 but what's the best way to get the networking components installed on the powerbook?

It only has a floppy drive no cd.

I sold you that 520c, so I feel obliged to try and help here

I can't rightly remember if I trashed the files, so if you open "extensions manager" in the control panels, you might be able to re-enable file sharing.

Another (long) alternative is to find 19 mac formatted floppies and install Mac OS 7.5.3 from here:

Glad to hear that in in spite of networking difficulties the 520c is working great.

Thanks for that. I did notice after I bought the laptop off eaby that you had posted it on here.

Thanks for the info. It works great for transferring stuff using the floppy drive but it shouldn't be too hard to connect it to the net so I can download stuff directly to it and then across to the plus.

I've downloaded a copy of 7.6.1 from macintosh garden (great site). I'll stick it in the pc tonigh and see if I can just copy the stuff off the cd that I need and then across to the powerbook.

TomeViewer is a mighty handy application for extracting needed files from a system install:

btw, if you can get hold of an HDI-30 SCSI cable, SCSI Disk Mode might be another way of getting files to and from plus and powerbook.

An update on this, I've managed to get the Powerbook on the network!

I managed to download open transport 1.1 and 1.2 from the apple support site. There's four images with each install but you can fit two images onto a 1.4 floppy, so I copied all the install images to the powerbook and mounted each image as a disk using diskcopy.

You need to install OT 1.1 first and then 1.2, once installed it adds a TCP/IP control panel and from there you can configure it to access your local router. I then downloaded Anarchie FTP program from Macintosh garden and all is good, I've managed to transfer heaps of stuff to the powerbook then onto 800k floppies and onto the Plus.

What browser are you using? icab is low overhead on your system:

Using a serial cable you could also network the plus and powerbook with local talk!

Might help save your floppy drive and all the bother of inserting copying and ejecting inserting copying ejecting...

I remember a control panel called "the red queen" a network packet compression utility that "may" speed up the transfer between the two machines.

Are you using system 6 or 7 on your plus?

MacWeb and MacWWW 1.03 for system 6 and wannabe is a good system 7 text browser.

I loaded up Netscape communicator 3 and also tried IE5 both work reasonably well. But all I really need is FTP and Anarchie works great. I simply download stuff from the web to my NAS box which I can then access via FTP, that's easier than browsing via the powerbook.

Yes, thought about connecting the plus to the powerbook using localtalk, I'll give that a go when I get a chance, I've got a few serial cables that may work but thanks for the offer, I'll let you know.

I'll check out those text browsers too, thanks for the links.
