PowerBook 3400c

I just bought one of these off of another member

From what I gather, it's got an Ethernet port, CD-ROM, Zip Drive, Maybe a battery, Active-Matrix screen, 180Mhz CPU, 144MB RAM (Rarity)

Paid $100 shipped. Not a bad deal? I got extra stuff to use with it.

I understand, with a bit of a mod, I can use Cardbus PCMCIA cards in it, I just gotta mod the card, right? Any mods i need to do to the laptop?

I have a Wavelan PCMCIA card i can use it, and will setup a wireless router with WEP (I have drivers for the wavelan too)

Yeah, with the RAM, shipping and all those accessories, that seems pretty fair.

Just want to let you know, I got the laptop (Will write the guy a PM after this) and right now, I am on wifi posting through Classilla. Btw, classichasclass did a really good job with this. No issues with it so far. Now I gotta get an IRC client, and work out a few IM Clients.

It's surprisingly quick for a machine. I am dual-booting the machine with OS 8.1/9.1 and it seems pretty stable.

It has a working battery (not sure how long, I will have to test it) and it has a Zip 100 and a 20x CD-ROM!!! wow, he really gave me a nice deal.

I didn't realize these laptops have VGA. first time I have had anything other than a G3 for old machines that had VGA.

Another thing, The keyboard is till better than the PB 540c that i have as a webserver in my room, but it's not not as good as say the lombard's keyboard. Or hell, even as good as a Wallstreet II that I used to have.

Classilla is a tad slow, as I type this, it's always at least about 4 characters behind where I am currently typing, so sometimes I make errors, correct them before i even see it pop up on the screen. It's just weird about the latency of it.

Anyone got any games they would recommend for this machine?

I am thinking Excape velocity, but what about any old classic games? What aboutr Duke Nukem, Doom or even Marathon?

JavaScript is still a bit slow, so the post editor is a little sluggish. That will be a bit better in 9.1 because of some of the other page and DOM optimizations I'm working on, but won't really improve until I get through with my JavaScript rewrite (the version after 9.1).

Now here's a good question. What would cause the speakers on the lid of the 3400c to "Crackle"? Like with static.

I fixed the issue I told the seller about with the screen artifacts, but when I got it out of the box, I kinda heard some crackling. Do the capacitors go out on these? Also, the sound works normally, and it seems to only be the speakers on the lid.

Any ideas?

Maybe your pinching the cable when you close it?

Seems to be a grounding issue. if I pull the power plug and run it from battery, it completely stops. Faulty PSU perhaps?

Yeah, sound crackling seems to be common among the 3400c. Me and my brother's PB3400c make a "crackle" sound only during startup, when it's loading the sound extension. Perfectly fine after that. I'm pretty sure I've updated them to the latest Sound Manager extension, when I did that that crackle was much less, but still there at startup.
