PowerBook 180 tunnel bake aftermath

IMG_4580.jpeg

I got my 180 and have been taking it apart to inspect. I love this part.

Only very minimal corrosion from the battery this time. Almost negligible.

Clean, not too many broken standoffs. Just the usual amount.

4MB RAM card, 80MB HD. Nice - if they work.

Wait, what’s happened to the CPU? o_O

It looks connected, just twisted. Not sure how that would have happened - almost seems like vandalism but then nothing else looks out of place.

I tried to boot the PowerBook as-is, but it wouldn’t boot and some of the components (a diode, transistor and inductor) on the main logic board overheated and melted the plastic sheet below. This has happened to me before.

So, I dismantled it again and tried the parts individually in my working 165. The processor daughtercard works just fine, along with the RAM. The hard drive is stone cold dead, not even an attempt to spin. The floppy I didn’t try and the screen… well…

It tunnels FAST. Way quicker than my other one did. The machine has a musty, damp smell about it so I wonder if that somehow reinforces the moisture theory.

With the screen off you can see how the panel restores itself from the outside in.

That definitely adds merit to the moisture theory in my opinion. I’ll add that my 170 was probably the best stored computer I’ve gotten in, judging off the smell. My guess is that it was stored in a climate controlled area/closet in its bag. No tunnel vision.

Someone pressed down with their thumb when inside of it doing something at some point, crazy..

So I was playing around with my baked screen again and I’m actually happy with the improved runtime before the corners darken. The baking has made it a more functional display. I’ll probably go for another round and see if I can clear up the symptoms completely. I just hope it doesn’t delaminate too bad.

Meanwhile, I saw this alert:

Found it interesting - especially the part about having to leave it in sleep proportional to the amount of time it was on. It’s similar to the way the tunnelling needs time to reset.

So this was the first LCD after I finished baking it. I have been using it on and off a fair bit:

This photo was taken just after baking in Oct 2023 and at exactly 1 hour’s run time.

Now look at this:

Same screen, last night; run for an hour (actually 1:04) and no signs of darkening.

Seems like this screen has continued to heal after baking.

Sweet. I have two untouched 180 displays that have tunnel vision. I just dont want to take apart a laptop to test them afterwards lol.. tempted though
