Powerbook 1400cs 177 not booting OS 7.6

Hello all, I have a .toast file with Mac OS 7.6 on it. I know the file works because it was tested before being sent to me. I burn it in Toast ( 7.1 ) and go to boot up my 1400, I get the floppy with the question mark. I've burnt this 4-5 times with no avail, any help?

Not all OS disks are bootable.

1. can you view the contents on a another mac?

2. can you boot the 1400 with a disk tools disk?

I can view the files on my Mac mini. And I've booted (recently) 8.1 and had that install, but I installed 7.6 from the 8.1 install and it says on boot " This system disk cannot be used on this macintosh model" because I forgot 8.1 uses HFS+ and I didn't format the hard drive.

I'm lost.

I can't work out what you have done and what you are trying to do.

What was 8.1 running on?

Normally to install an OS you have to have booted from a different device than the target you are going to put the OS on.

Do you have anything at all to boot the 1400 from?

Where did the 7.6 image come from? Who made it, and what from?

Okay,

1) Had 9.1 on it.

2) Booted from 8.1 CD, installed 8.1

3) On mac mini made 7.6 CD.

4) Installed 7.6 from 8.1

5) Went to boot, says " Cannot use this system disk on this model macintosh"

6) Got 7.6 image ( From my friend Kirk Zathy, old owner of macdomain.org. It is 7.6 retail made into a toast image)

7) Burnt with toast 7.1, Will not boot. It has a floppy with a question mark on it.

2) Booted from 8.1 CD, installed 8.1
Good, you have a working state you can get back to. Put this back on so you know you having a working system and can then use the "Set Startup disk" control panel.

3) On mac mini made 7.6 CD.4) Installed 7.6 from 8.1

5) Went to boot, says " Cannot use this system disk on this model macintosh"
What? Normally you cannot install an OS on the disk you booted from.

6) Got 7.6 image ( From my friend Kirk Zathy, old owner of macdomain.org. It is 7.6 retail made into a toast image)7) Burnt with toast 7.1, Will not boot. It has a floppy with a question mark on it.
Have a look at it with the Mac Mini, does it have a blessed System Folder? I suggest boot from the CD-ROM to do an OS installation, or boot from a "Disk Tool" or recovery floppy.

From http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/powerbook-1400.html

requires System 7.5.3 (with PowerBook 1400 Enabler) through 9.1, but not 7.5.5; Mac OS 8.1 and 8.6 recommended

Thank you so much! I now have a working OS 7.6 system :)
(a) Can you tell us how you got out of your pickle? It would be nice to know what the problem really was.

( B) Staying at 7.6? I recommend update to 7.6.1 if not going to run 8+.

Hey I would be glad to! I installed 8.1 again, but this time I formatted the Hard drive as Mac OS Standard. Then I install a minimal 8.1. I boot into that and put my 7.6 CD into the tray and install a "clean Install" onto the 8.1 drive. Then I install the orinoco drivers and now I have a speedy portable workstation. I will upgrade to 7.6.1 protty soon, but I'm having too much fun playing on this ( I am posting from it right now actually, in my kitchen having a glass of chocolate milk) ;)
