I highly advise against running the appearance manger. I use 8.6 on mine, and it is a little slow at times. I suggest sticking with 7.6.1, and use it as is. it will be very fast. That is, of course, unless you want to run IE 5.1 on it...

The 1400 is limited to 64 megs of RAM and MacOS 8 adds a lot of bloat over 7.6.1 and the minimum requirements are higher, so that offsets any speed gains to be had from using native PPC code. The 603 is no speed demon, either. It was the replacement for the 601 at the bottom of the PPC family. Head over to System 7 today and you'll see many of the members there use 1400's with 7.6.1 and get good use out of them.

Well, I totaly forgot i posted here already but here it goes. Powerbook is in the mail and on its way to me. It is a 166mhz with a 2gb hard drive and 16mb of ram. I already bought a ethernet card for it so i can do some web browsing (if i am lucky) And Dan 7.1 HFS+ on Nubus is limited to a 2GB drive, that means it is practiclay worthless if i ever do upgrade the drive. Also the Ui of 8.1 can be used on 7.6.1 using appearance manger so your two pluses are useless to me.
you know - looking at those results i would still go with 8.5.
of course system folder is going to be bigger - what os upgrade makes it smaller?
same with memory - and not a huge jump anyway.
boot and restart times - well fast is good, but slow i can live with too, its not as though its a constant part of using a computer for a session.
the other two results are not dis-similar in my eyes.
stick os8 on as a double boot using syspicker and you can give us a fresh look at a comparison?
I have 7.6 and 8.1 on my 540c and with 12mb ram 8.1 is usable with 8.1 - 7.6 is obviously way better speed wise, but it does cope with 8.1.
a pb1400 should do very well with 8.5 and 64mb ram I remember.
of course, stick your easy to come by and cheap G3 upgrade in there and we can argue if 8.6 or 9 is better!

It Has Arrived!
Running the original install of Mac Os 7.6.1 (I checked, and there are documents on it from 1998 still that i deleted) Claris works 4 and all the other goodies. Got Speeddoubler 8 (just for 68k emulation speed up) and LibMoto(helps PPC speed ups, 8 had this built in but 7.6.1 did not)

i dont kno, i run 9.1 on my 1400cs/166 but mine has the fiull 64 mb of ram. it runs a little slow but it does what i need it to do.
