Power Macintosh 9600 with No Sound

So "no sound" might be a stretch - there's no sound coming from the internal speaker. Headphones play just fine. I have tested the speaker itself, and even tried installing a different version of Mac OS hoping it was a software issue. What's weird is that there isn't even a startup chime, so I was not too optimistic the SSW would make a difference. Is this a known issue on these model Macs? Any ideas on other things to try?

When something is inserted in any speaker/headphone jack, the internal speaker is disabled, even for startup chime. If it does this when nothing is in the jack(s), a jack usually has an issue that is breaking the connection to the internal speaker. This could be a small filing or object stuck in there, or some kind of internal corrosion.

The board itself is clean (no corrosion), and I did insert/remove the headphone plug a few times to see if that might clear things up. No luck. I guess next step is break out the multimeter and see if the contacts are closing inside the connector when headphones aren't connected. This is where schematics would really come in handy!
