Power book G4 1.5ghz plays jump randomly

Hey, my sisters room mate came to me with her laptop telling me that it plays an elevator version of jump by van halen randomly. I couldn't find anything on google about it and don't know what to tell her. anyways i told her to get a list of all the processes while the song is playing. i don't know if any has heard of this before.

Either iTunes is just burping from time to time, or she's discovered the most epic easter egg ever

hahaha we already confrimed that isn't itunes lolololol but i dont thing there is anything wrong with it. none the less, she isnt a fan...

Check the book for the song.

Either that or do a archive install. Someone has played a very mean trick. Have her turn off all internet access from the book and see if the problem still occurs.

Aren't there recording programs that can take audio from separate programs that are currently playing audio? I think Audio Highjack is what I am thinking of, try installing a demo and maybe it could tell you what program is playing the music.

Sircabulon had the best idea from the very beginning -- just open up a Terminal window and look at the processes that are running. It's the most straightforward approach, and doesn't require the installation of additional programs. Plus, you can just kill the process in question as a verification step.

The point is that Terminal gives you the same information as Hijack, but without having to install anything. It's a diagnostic, not curative, step (see sircabulon's original post for context), as is installing Hijack to identify what process is involved. Just as no one proposed Hijack to solve the problem, I was not proposing to use Terminal to do so either.

It only happens once ever couple of weeks which makes it so hard to find out. I don't think it is serious if it is a virus because it will mute with the computer. The only way she was able to make it stop was to restart the entire 'Book.

Hmmm - it's probably scheduled using cron or launchd, then.

i took a look at her activity monitor and there were three launchd processes open, but none of them were using any memory or processor time. Is there any way that i can check to see if a process has an attached file? Also I was unable to find a music file, but that just means it isn't labeled as van halen or jump.

The process listing should have the path to the programme running. What's it look like? Also, have you tried checking the system logs?
