Potential Conquest: Emac!

Well, it all started a few months ago when I was working on a Language Arts Project. A teacher happened to walk by where I was working and noticed my copy of Apple Confidential laying on top of my school books next to me. After a 5 minute chat, I learned that he had (And still has) an Apple IIc that he used to program on. Fast Forward to today. Since I recently got a couple of Apple IIes, I figured that I would ask him if he wanted to trade since I have wanted an Apple IIc for some time now (To go with my matching Monitors) and he said that it was at his parents house. Just as I was about to walk out, he added that he had an Emac that he bought at a school auction (Along with about 10 others) that was taking up space. In a couple of days we are going to meet up and I will (Hopefully) get an Emac! I will post an update on the specs when I pick it up.

$200 is way too steep for a 700MHz :O My 800MHz wouldn't even sell for $100

I hope you get that eMac. A lot of people don't seem to like them, but I absolutely love mine. it even took my PC's place on my desk :p I use it for everything.

I want to say $50. I spent I think $29.99 on my dual 1.25Ghz MDD G4 (although it had no ram or HDD and was "As-is") from GoodBytes (Goodwill computer recycling center. it's awesome)

It was listed As-Is and says "Turns on, doesn't boot" They had a tie-wrap on the door handle, but when I asked if I could take a look inside, the clerk was helpful, I cut the cable and looked in. No RAM, no HDD. so I took it home

they had a (LOL) WIndows 2000 Pro disc in the CD-ROM. Not to be sarcastic, but how many techs these days (even the ones that work on their neighbor's machines) actually think putting a windows CD in a mac will make it boot? (short of modern macs, and it involves bootcamp, not just holding down the "C" key

There are better deals out there. Keep looking, but I wouldn't go higher than $50 for a 700/800 and no more than $75 for a 1.42Ghz. It's just not worth it with the outdated tech. I can get a dual 1.8Ghz G5 w/ 4GB RAM locally (on craigslist) for $150 (Not sure if it's still there) with dual 320GB SATA drives.

I would pick it up, but I am completely packed up with machines. No more room, but I think I can live with my MDD :) (oh and the lombard i scored recently)

@notcrazy_iminsane: Well, if I get an eMac, I would really like to get a 1.42 GHz model and then max it out and run Leopard. But since a 700 MHz model can't even run Tiger, I don't really want it (Which is OK because he decided to give it to his niece). I do agree that $200 is way too much for a 700MHz model eMac, but sadly, most eMacs that appear on Craigslist are around that number. What amazes me is that is it usually cheaper to buy them (And just about anything) online!

@coius: Man you get Macs cheap where you live! The eMacs around here go for as much as that G5 and I am lucky if someone even posts something Apple that is older then an iMac G3 (And if they do, it is usually around $100). Around here, A G3 iMac is around $50, A PM G3 is around $100, A G4 iMac is around $150, and a PM G4 is around $200. Things are just too expensive. And if there is a good price, the people who are selling it are usually lying about its condition. Which has happened with my iMac G3s and a bunch of gaming stuff. Even on eBay, people don't seem to be very honest.

I will probably spend my money on those Free Macs in California (Which shipping will probably be killer on the stuff I would like to get, but that one ad has a bigger varity and cheaper prices then all of the macs on craigslist in my area).

Oh well, I guess I have just gotta keep looking...

Best thing to do would either go on eBay or look around pawn shops and check with computer recyclers. I got mine for free from a recycler that I befriended in my computer electronics class :p Since he doesn't know much about Macs, I get them for free as long as I fix them up and give them to others. In short, I have first picks on any Mac he collects in the state. If I come across another eMac, I'll let you know and get it to ya for the cost of shipping alone

Hey retro, a 700 MHz eMac will run Tiger very well.
Most anything down to 500mhz will run it(and leopard) decently, however, you must have the RAM for it. This means minimum 512mb, but I wouldn't want to use one lower than 640mb.
