Possible CRT oddity conquest

I'm negotiating with someone for a 24" Sun (Sony tube) widescreen CRT monitor.

This thing is awesome, and totally weird because I've never even heard of a widescreen CRT monitor.

It has nice specs, too. .24 dot pitch, max resolution of 1920x1200 @ 98Hz 8-o , and a built in KVM with USB ports and dual video inputs.

I'm heading over in a couple days to check it out. I'm hoping it's in good condition.

I'm a sucker for CRTs, I can't stand being fixed to a single resolution on LCDs. Since this sucker is widescreen, I'll get the best of both worlds. :)

Here's a website with the monitor's specs: http://www.imagewerkscomputers.com/item162.htm

That is some sweet stuff. I'm a CRTophile myself, I've only accepted fixed resolution monitors as a necessary evil.

I wonder what a 13W3 hookup looks like? I've never even heard of that one.

Yea, I seen those before. I think they were one of the last CRTs SONY made and sold them to video editing people, $2000?

Very heavy, wide, and deep.

Google is your friend, as always. Here's a nice picture on Wikipedia.

Almost any UNIX workstation made before 1998 or so (And quite a few after, although VGA ports started turning up on the lower-end graphics options) used these for their monitor connections. (Often these systems would only have the 13w3 port on the system unit, with a cable breaking out the signals into four BNC coaxial connectors on the monitor end.)

I'd still knife an old lady to get my hands on one.
I feel the same way about the Apple Portrait Display, another 13W3 monitor. There's one on eBay now for $75 before shipping, but I just have a bad feeling about its odds for survival in the shipping process (something about the Portrait monitors just screams fragility..)

I was looking at that portrait display, too, and though I would like one, I would be worried about its survival and another thing, since I move a lot, weight and bulk is sorta prohibitive. But back in the day, big CRTs were truly lustworthy--I mean, a 1600x1200 screen in the early nineties would have been an insane amount of real estate. My question is, for those who like them, what recommends them given their weight, bulk, and power draw?

Best,

John

the "depot" I worked for in the 90's got a large bulk skid of 19 maybe 20 inch HP 13W3 to BNC workstation monitors, they were recycling, I snagged one and it took 2 of us to lug it down the small warehouse dock height stairs into the back of my car. I managed to waddle it up a flight of stairs at my parents house and get it onto my computer stand all on my lunch break

I had a vga to bnc cable in the area already, but my poor computer stand started to bow, of course my computer stand is a Ikea like, mini fridge can sit in it seized structure, made out of 3/4 inch particleboard with a 1 inch thick top sold at sears in the late 80's, it disturbed me, I did not think twice and took it back to work and put it back on the pile, and my arms were sore for the rest of the day

The only reason I would recommend a CRT these days is for color reproduction and for people who need multiple resolutions on one monitor. They have fixed the ghosting issues years ago, the blacks (for computer monitors and TV's) do look decent now, and contrast is pretty good. You still have issues with 24bit color depth on most LCD screens.

People doing video editing still keep CRT monitors around to see what the final product looks like (if they need color correction).

Yeah, I spotted one of them semi-locally on evilpay, and the drool factor was immense. I hope you have a couple of sturdy friends and/or a forklift.

This guy has gone quiet. Man! He left his cell phone number and everything. I've emailed and phone, and no answer. Ticks me off. Craigslist is so completely hit or miss. What a gorgeous monitor. I'll give it another go. Sigh.
