Portable sleeping hard drive

My portable puts the hard drive to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity.

Normally, that would be desired behavior for power management.

However, the hard drive I'm using is a replacement 40MB standard scsi drve. (Quantum ProDrive LPS) I made an adapter cable. It works great... boots up just fine... but if it goes to sleep, when it wakes up and reinitializes the drive, the system hangs.

Any ideas?
