About the Macintosh XL thing... Are you sure the software you're using was made after 1989? Maybe it doesn't know what that gestalt id refers to?

Edit: the Macintosh XL Screen Kit upgrade changed the resolution from 720x364 to 608x432, which is really close to 640x400. Maybe anything bigger than 512x342 defaults to a Mac XL? Who knows?
