Pismo for a Pound (£)

Or you could just replace the LCD and HDD (if that is the problem). That's what I'm planning to do with my Blueberry Clamshell.

 
Hard drive no problem, I have processor boards coming out of my ears, and plenty of RAM to spare, but I don't know how easy it is to come by an LCD.

I'm probably jumping the gun here because the seller hasn't even posted yet.

It's all right, I've found another spares/repairs Pismo with a good LCD.

Update - the £1 Pismo arrived as described, now up and running with a clone of the original machine, 512mb RAM, G3 500 card, and 32GB SSD.

Airport card not present, indeed it seems the cage has been removed, so a Belkin PCMCIA is in and running.

Full testing to follow, firmware update yet to complete.

Am awaiting yet another eBay snipe of a spares / repairs Pismo but with a good screen.

The latest Pismo has arrived and as suspected had the dead PRAM battery issue - swapped in the working battery from the broken screen one and booted fine into OS 9, still with all the personal files of the previous user 8-o ... when are people going to learn about personal security?

Now running great as a G3 500, 1GB RAM and 32GB SSD, 10.4.11 installed (cloned from original Pismo). 2 reasonable batteries plus DVD expansion bay module.

So, now have one for home (G4) and plan to keep the G3 at work for down time, plus one with broken screen for spare parts.

Don't think I need to buy any more for a while ...

About the data, I know right?!?! It seems every computer I have bought used has a hard drive full of data. The iBook G4 had an iMovie project for the funeral of the original owner (CREEPY!). The Cube had a bunch of, images (were just going to leave it there). Sawtooth had business files (which makes since because it never saw a paid upgrade or a firmware update, and was the BASELINE model). eMac had a guy's websites files on it and a resume plus CS2 and Office 2001. Goes on and on...

So how many Pismos do you have now?

One G3 400 with bits missing and a broken screen (keeping for parts)

That'll do for now :D

As for data, I suppose if the machine wouldn't boot, to be fair most people might not think of pulling the hard drive out to trash it.

I've seen a great deal of 2nd hand computers (both Mac and PC) which still have personal files on them when they arrive.

It's very tempting to take a peak, but mostly I've formatted the drive and let the seller know what I've done so they might think next time.

I like to go peaking to see whats on there. Cube was the only exception, as the desktop picture was set to something that grossed me out, popped the Tiger disc in and went from there. I still haven't figured out how to reinstall Sys 7 on the 165, 5300cs, or 5300c, so all of the previous owners data is on there (although the previous owner of the 165 and 5300c wipped most of the data, since the wife was an Apple Junky!).

I think if it didn't work, that would be an excuse. That means the original owners of the Sawtooth, eMac, iMac, iBook G3s and G4 messed up. ::)
